PatMat's Z-Drives

So I want to make a couple of these in 1:72 for my next project. Going to build them first, because if I can't, there's no reason to build the model!

I like the belt drive better than big bevel gears...

You need tools to do justice to a job like this. I've had a lathe for years, but went out and got a mill for this.

The lower case and mating cap were the trickiest parts.

Gears... using the smallest available commercial miter gears, 48P 15T, with a 5/16" pitch circle.

With a ball bearing up above and Oilites below (where water is possible), the vertical shaft runs smoooothly...

That's all for now, going out of town for a week.

This is the kind of project I love to see develop. Great workmanship, Pat.

Years ago, I machined a stern drive using the same brass bevel gears you're using. Power was a marinized Veco .61. The gears were destroyed the first day out. I don't see any problem using electric motors.

Was Stock Drive Products the source for your gears?

Ed

SDP and Boston both offer these gears.

Great work Pat.

Seems like the smallest gears I could ever locate were 3/8" in diamter.
What's the part number for the small bevel gears you found?

Let's hope this turns out better than most PatMat projects, thinking of those funny animated puppet movies, assuming that is where you based your nickname on.

So far, looking good. Not afraid the brass will become dull when exposed to water?

Won't be exposed to water... It will be painted.

What puppets? It's my name, as in http://matthewsmodelmarine.wordpress.com
