I fly off of a rough grass runway that is not always trimmed. Take offs and landing are sometimes an adventure because of the prop and gear catching the grass especially if the grass is damp. I'm looking for receiver ready (or nearly so) tail dragger planes that have good ground clearance. I like planes in the 55" wingspan plus category, an extra inch or two of ground clearance makes all the difference. Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

The FMS J-3 Cub, 1400mm wing span is a wonderful flying plane. Lot of ground clearance. It weakness is its landing gear. Rough landings will stretch the spring, if not breaking some plastic part. Can be beefed up using wire between certain stress points. You could even take the wheels and undercarriage off and get aluminum landing gear with really big wheels. It is available from Banana Hobbies at a very good price. (ARF or RTF)

The funcub has clearance but the stock landing gear is very springy and you could end up cutting the lawn with it.

Multiplex Mentor. A sixty-three inch wing that is easily removable for transport and more prop clearance than you will ever need. Slows down on final easily and works very well on unimproved landing sites. Great ground handling, too.

Tower Hobbies is the only one that comes up as selling a receiver ready Multiplex Mentor but they have it listed as "Discontinued". Does anyone here know of another source?

Will an Easy Star style model take off from a grass runway or do they have to be hand launched?

Yes, most EZ style models have enough thrust to ROG, but why would you want to do that when all they need is an easy over hand toss for a launch?

Get whatever plane suits your fancy, then swap out the motor to a higher-Kv motor so you can use a smaller-diameter prop.

Most tail draggers at 55 inches will clear an electric prop on grass, if the grass is decently cut. What you need is bigger wheels (3 inches and bigger) on the front gear, so they will not dig into the grass.

Clipped wing Cubs, Cubs, Beavers, electric "Ugly Sticks" -- all sorts of tail draggers will fly off grass. The SeaGull 66 inch Decathlon with a 50-55 700 kv motor and 15 inch prop flies wonderfully off grass with 4S power. Or the SeaGull SpaceWalker. The DeNight Special with wheel pants and a 1500 watt 700 kv motor flies nicely off grass (but lands fast).

The key is big tundra whacker front tires, and at least a 1500 watt motor at 600-700kv.
Or a leadershobby power 46 at 2,000 watts and 700 kv, on 4S voltage.

The real challenge is avoiding the sprinklers when they turn on! That will teach you precision landing skills!
