If you just want clear covering, why not try Doculam?

Source and examples are here

Micafilm is not just clear plastic. It has a fibrous weave micro fabric attached to a clear mylar? outer skin.

It was marketed for years by Coverite and the clear/ transparent version weighed 0.75 oz/sq. yd (and looked almost exactly like doped white modelspan or silkspan) and the coloured versions about 1.35 oz/sq. yd.

Its main advantage was its light weight (often lighter than heavily doped tissue) and the fact that it had fantastic tear resistance and torsional rigidity.

I have used it on everything from indoor models to 12 ft RC sailplanes.
I still have a couple of rolls which I have reserved for very selective projects.- mostly indoor stuff and E 36 electric duration models.

the sailboat guys also used Micafilm for sails and decking on their 1 metre models.

It had to be manufactured for a purpose other than model airplane covering and perhaps it still is. I would like to trace its origin and see if it can be re-introduced to the modelling fraternity.

Micafilm clear on my Baby Playboy

John,

I had a Baby Playboy scaled up to 460 sq. in. wing area I flew from the 1990's until it flew away at a SAM contest a couple years back. I flew it in SAM Electric LER event and SAM Electric Texaco event many years. Also set it up with a diesel for SAM A Texaco and lost it at a SAM contest a couple years back by getting too high and too far down wind. It had some hour flights it Electric Texaco over the years and flown a lot in LER. Also flown at home for sport with diesels and electric power. What I noticed is that after many years of flying the clear Micafilm on the top of the wing became brittle. Probably needed a coat of paint to protect for the suns radiation over time. The old time SAM guys did nto like plastic coverings but were fooled by clear Micafilm thinking it was clear doped silkspan. Fooled the old geeziers. Jack Hiner

Coverite also made "Silkspun Coverite". I don't know if there are differences between it and Micafilm. There was also Coverlite - again I don't know its characteristics though I do have a couple of sealed packets.

Below, Silkspun Coverite before doping. Note the fuzz. Looks pretty much like tissue after doping.

Some people swear by it. Some colors were easier to work with than others.
I found that nitro would make the colors run.

Shauli-

BP Hobbies carries a covering called Fibafilm they say "is a polyester heat shrink film similar to Micafilm. It weighs 1.03 ozs per square yard." But they have only colors, no transparent.

I have not tried it, so don't know how similar it is or whether you could remove the color with lacquer thinner, etc.

This is a Solarfilm product, you should be able to find it on their site, if it's still available.

10 micron clear 1/2 mil 13.6 gms. per sq. metre

I just covered my Sparky wing, both sides ( 2 x 338 sq in) with transparent Oracover and gained 0.9 oz. which is heavier than Doculam; I could have used lighter material, but found this weight acceptable.

Clear Oracover is listed at 54g/M2,
see table at
https://www.oracover.de/downloads/Pr..._2010_engl.pdf

MYLAR COVERING MATERIAL/FOIL
10 micron clear 1/2 mil 13.6 gms. per sq. metre 10 metres x 315 mm wide 5.00 plus post

15 micron clear 3/4 mil 20.4 gms. per sq. metre 7.5 metres x 315 mm wide 5.00 plus postage
to order, see
http://www.freeflightsupplies.co.uk/
or send an email, which I did.

I got excellent service from Mike.

Doculam

The actual roll weighs just 8 lbs for 500 ft, at 25 inch wide.

This roll covers 1000 sq ft and weighs (8 lbx16 oz) 128 oz.

If we round the numbers out, roughly 10 sq ft/ sq meter makes this material about 1.3 oz/sq M (28 g/oz), which makes it about twice as heavy as the 15 micron mylar.
