Talon 90 ESC users: Your opinions, please.

I searched the Power Systems forum, but I thought I should inquire here, as well:

How do you Talon 90 speed control users like your units? It appears to be a heckuva deal: Ninety bucks for a big ESC with an on-board 20-amp BEC, 6V or 8V output, and full programability with the Castle Link and its software (which I already have).

Any user experience input you might have would be appreciated.

actually they are only $70-75. I just bought one, I have not been able to use it yet though. I am assuming it will be a good esc as it is made by Castle Creations. hopefully other people who haved put a lote of time on it will chime in.

I have 2 and they are great. One in a Trex and one in my Beast 60e. However DO NOT use it on a 28 pole motor (Bigger Hackers). Anything else and they are great!

i have one, works fine. definitely does not have the same amount of programmability that the ice/edge series has, but still works well

The main problem is that the motor connectors are large and soldered direct to the circuit board. Align connectors are smaller resulting in a better solder joint. There is no strain relief Ė if you have some vibration (like a helicopter or airplane with a high RPM motor) the connectors come off the circuit board. Sometimes itís a solder joint failure and sometimes the copper comes off the circuit board. Some remove the connectors and solder on flexible wires to reduce circuit board stress. I have not heard of any failures after that mod.

A 3D aircraft has a relatively slow turning prop and low vibration so the Talon 90 would probably not have a problem.

The other problem is mainly a helicopter problem. Helicopters have a very high servo load and trying to pump 20 amps through a standard RC connector can cause problems. At least you loose voltage; at worst the connector melts. Again I donít think that would be a problem on 3D airplanes.

I have one on my H9 Sbach .60 and no problems. This is the only ESC I don't use an external BEC.

Did you do the dual BEC connector mod or are you just running the single BEC connector?

?

I have often wondered why they did not make it that way from the factory? I hate to get a new product and have to mod it because the manufacture did not do a good design.

Yeah it would make sence to just use a larger gauge wire from the get go, instead of balancing the load with two. Maybe there is something I don't get, but I go get I'm having to use an extra channel.
