Ricoh GR, the new benchmark

Simply the lightest APS-C sensor camera, 249 grams, what to say more ?
16M, 18mm/2.8 lens (FOV of 28mm film equivalent), these are the main numbers, the rest read below.

http://www.seriouscompacts.com/f38/n...4797-b-h-18057

How small ? To have a better image, it is only 15% bigger as volume than a RX100 ! Never was so futile to airborne a DSLR...

$799 could seems much, but, when you look at competition, it's the cheapest. Next camera as size and weight and having same sensor and lens numbers is Nikon A, $1100.

LE: a side by side vs Nikon A:

Remote shutter release?
AV out (non-HDMI)?

Hoping those will both be possible via the USB port on the side.

early reviews are not that great with respect to image quality

I had a GR Digital IV used in a Maja and had a strange issue with focusing mode set to infinity (which should produce sharp pictures from 2m and anything beyond), as reported also in this link. The funny thing was that sometimes the image was sharp and sometimes not, very inconsistently.

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/16159176

At some point I was playing around with the tilt sensor, which is an unnecessary little feature that lets you know whether the tilt is 0 deg on the horizon or not. Photos taken upwards were sharp and taken slightly downwards were not and this was consistent.

Eventually I played around with the infinity focus setting itself in manual. When pointed upwards, infinity was really infinity and when pointed upwards, I had to apply three or four steps above 0.3m to produce a sharp picture. It seems that the tilt below horizon reversed this setting.

I reported the issue to Ricoh Japan, but didn't get a reply. If you do get this camera and want to use the infinity focus setting (which is likely), you should look into this.

The GR Digital IV uses CA-1 I think. I got a lead from here which worked.

The USB connector on this camera is very specific (flytron does not include it). I used the data cable and chopped that up basically. At some point the cable got yanked out, tearing up the copper inside the plug. This was not available locally nor nationally, so had to source this online somewhere.

Depends on the reviewer and JPG/RAW processing.
Conversely, I read more positives vs Nikon A than negatives.

Not what this shows:

Although the full test (when available) will be a better guide.

So ... this camera is available now and getting great reviews (DP Review did their full test and gave it a gold award). I'm certainly tempted - somebody must using one for AP by now, surely?!

Did you ever get round to buying / testing this camera ? I'm interested in using it for AP but wander if there is any issue with infinity lock when pointing downwards as others have reported.

Funnily enough, I ordered a combined shutter/video out cable today:

http://www.gentles.ltd.uk/gentwire/videousb.htm

Just need the camera now Price has dropped a bit already, hoping for a few special offers over xmas / new year. The 21mm adapter is unfortunately a non-starter for AP as it almost doubles the weight of the camera

If there really is an infinity lock issue it isn't a show stopper, I've only seen it mentioned when the level is switched on in the display anyway.

I've more or less given up on my Sony RX100M2 for AP as there still aren't any r/c shutter cables for it and video out is a pain - the socket is micro HDMI (type D) and all the lightweight flyeads have the slightly bigger mini HDMI connector (type C) used by the NEX-7 etc. It's a great 'normal' camera though

It might be the GRIV that suffers from the infinity lock, it seems that there is some confusion over the model numbers - see the thread I started on DIYDrones:
http://diydrones.com/forum/topics/ricoh-gr

Either way, I'm also going to give it a try as I want the camera for normal photography anyway.

I am planning to fire the shutter from APM autopilot, so need to work out if I need an adapter or not for the gentles cable - still waiting for my plane and APM board.

BTW only just down the road from you near Reading !

Small world!

Yup there's a fair bit of confusion with older cameras also being called "GR".

I have a 'ShutterBug Pro' that I use to drive my current AP camera:

http://www.dpcav.com/xcart/ShutterBug-Pro.html

The advantage being that you can set it to take a picture every X seconds while the r/c channel is 'on' (rather than just getting one photo each time you flip the switch). So I plan to use that to drive the gentWIRE cable.

So ... I finally got around to buying and flying a Ricoh GR.

All works as expected, I'm using the gentWIRE cable to simultaneously supply video-out and operate the shutter release. Plugging in the cable automatically turns off the display screen on the camera, saving battery power. No problems with infinity focus so far, image quality is excellent.

Good to hear, I have one too and enjoying using it as a normal camera, just trying to work out what gimbal to buy before it goes airborne...
