Amazing mod to one of Kevin's Katos,

....since he seems to build them around 40oz

That Kato is probably still wondering which end is up.

So very cool Justin. So much Agile for so very little fragile.

Best wing aerobatics I've had the pleasure to watch.

Is the Kato still being produced?

I can detail some of the modifications if there is any interest - they really made for the most nimble (yet controllable) wing I've ever flown.

Nice video dude! You fly a wing kinda like I do (not straight lol). I might take on the challenge of a LW Mamba wing. Pics and info on go you got it so light would be awesome. Does it seem to lack penetration at all?

Detail the mods Justin,

....Kevin's in need of some EPP and time to cut cores, but is still capable to kit Katos

I believe you should be able to get just about any combat wing down to this weight or lower pretty easily as long as it is made out of 1.3 lb EPP or lower density; here are some things I did.

-Ditch the balsa and coroplast - heavy, nasty, breakable, bendable stuff. I use 6mm EPP covered in 1.7 mil laminating film to make my elevons as well as my winglets.

-For control horns I cut up an old gift card I had - for this size/weight of plane I find that the plastic found in old credit cards/gift cards works very well for control horns - cut a slit in the foam, sand the horns, and then glue them in with some gorilla glue.

-NO STRAPPING TAPE

-1.7 mil laminating film behind the CG
-3 mil laminating film in front of the CG
-Only one layer of both - the important thing is to get a drum-tight finish.

Linkages

I use CF Rod glued to nylon clevises

- Electronics
HS-65 MG's or Equivalent
700 MaH LiFe battery (6.6 volts makes for excellent servo response, and the one I use weighs less than an ounce)

Thanks!

It's got a pretty thick airfoil but no problem penetrating in 10-15 mph, definitely not fast by any means but that's not exactly the goal either. I like to be able to fly forwards and backwards.

Two thumbs way up for this modified Kato. Another pilot an I both had a turn at the sticks. What a fun wing to fly. I could flip and twist this little beast really close to the slope with ease. It was so responsive and yet so forgiving. I am not a good ultrabtic pilot (yet) but this glider would definetly help build skills and confidence in a hurry...while having loads of fun.

Way to go Justin; great work once again!

Justin,

I recently picked up my cores from MATIN. Looking for a light build for some Midwest Acro in Missouri.
Are you still working with this size NS? And who did you purchase battery from?

Are you going with a carbon ribbon or the carbon rod in your recent build.
Thanks,
Ken
