There is one aircraft that can propell itself indefinitely by it's own on-board solar panels. I believe NASA debuted this aircraft a few years ago. It's far from being able to carry any significant load, though. To be fair, it's far from looking sturdy enough to withstand a serious gust of wind. |

I think the solar panels is meant more in the sense for charging the batteries on the ground while stationary, not powering the plane in the air.
Maybe instead of the wing covering material the solar panels can be implemented, advancements in this technology aims to make solar more flexible, not sure where they're at yet, but it's coming. All sorts of efficiency breakthroughs have been achieved the past year with solar tech, i'ts a matter of now just waiting for it to be commercially available. |

UL glider retrofitting to electric
Hello everyone Gianni from Mantova ( Italy )
I'm a newcomer to the forum I am a glider pilot , and I have always believed in the electric propulsion , I am the service director of the biggest 5-axis machine tools for the aerospace industry and I am in contact with all the country and company of the sector . I am also owner of Alisport Silent Club OP ( fixed Konig engine on the Pylon ). In winter time I want start retrofit to electric my Silent OP, and I need ( if possible some support from the blog ) Silent data are: 130Kg empty weight W/o engine 80Kg pilot weight ( me ) Max LD 34/96KmH ( with winglets ) Actual power is 28HP Konig SD570 According to the information from the Italian manufactor of theSilent and based on the SIlent electro AE1 ( retractable Pylon type ) the characteristics of the very old version are: Motor type : Not specified Motor power: 13Kw Motor rpm: 3.400rpm Motor weight. 8.5Kg Battery Weight: 40Kg Ramp up: 2m/s take off. <200mt on grass field Propeller: two blade folding type , 1,92mt diameter , 1300rpm Electric retractable Pylon Now , I spend last two night to read all the information posted , because I have to choice the BLDC direct drive and right propeller , now I'm confused because i've to make the decision to use Jobj motor or the 200cc equivalent CA120-80-12 take a look at : http://www.gsmodels.com/en/products0...&fid=100080417 Powered glider don't need power to cruise and after take off reach 600 / 800mt ( 5 to 8 minutes ) the motor must be retract in the fusellage and soaring can start , restarting motor in flight is not safe and depend of height , finally what I want is have power capacity for 20 to 30 minutes ??!! I've been order to Alisport the electric pylon used in the engine Silent IN because I don't want made experiments so I will use standard retraction system. Can some ones help me to suggest the right motor BMS , battery and so on ? Thanks in advance ( and sorry for my English ) |

Hello Gianni
Concerning a direct drive BLDC outrunner, here is a candidate Parawatt motor weight 7.4 kg Power max 20 kW Kv 35 rpm/V (star connecting) contact : www.parawatt.com Very robust motor (hollow shaft 30mm + excellent ball bearings) Could be used with MGM Compro HBC series controler Probably with 13S-14S Lipo you could obtain 1300 rpm on your 1.92m prop Louis |

Your selected motor is same as the hobbyking Turnigy CA120-70 Brushless Outrunner (100cc eq) Dave did try it on his Lazair, but eventually decided for a different one He did also all the rewind stuff Maybe is better to use a gear that rewind.... Anyhow, if you look in old post you may get some info about the motor and the rewinding actions Tchuss E_lm_70 |
