Great Planes Kunai 1.4M Warmliner

Sharp looking electric glider

Splash

Sharp, Sporty Performance

The Kunai from Great Planes is a sharp looking warmliner sailplane with a 1.4M wingspan. The wings are built up and covered and the fuselage is fiberglass with a carbon fiber tail boom. It comes as an ARF or Rx Ready and the build is pretty quick.

I got a chance to fly it at SEFF last month and had a blast with it. You can fly it like a sport plane, hunt for thermals, or just cruise around the sky. The speed was pretty good for a glider of this type, I'd say around 80MPH. It retained its energy well after a dive and I did some rolling circles, high climbs with power off dives into rolls and loops. The model they let me fly had a spoileron setup which helped slow it down some for landings. If you're looking for a fun sport glider you should definitely check out the Kunai.

See the Kunai at Great Planes.

I'm excited for this one. It's something different at a good price and quick to put together. It looks cool as well. Can't wait to fly it. I'm glad it has a wide envelope of things it can do. That will help me from becoming bored. Mostly I fly 3D/Precision Aerobatics so this will be different yet still aerobatic. It might be a good one in the wind when the floaty planes are not as ideal.

I'm Q.C.ing production samples of this thing right this very moment. Once we put in an instruction manual addendum for a mistake I made these things should get approved and put on a boat for shipping to here.

Looks like a great model and a great price to boot, might have to nab one and convert it to a powerless slopey

Powerless?

Nah, whatever floats your boat!

Get the ARF then (no servos, no ESC) and put in some slim, lightweight servos like Airtronics 92804 or something!

Guess you'll need some ballast up in the nose though to account for no motor or battery.

will this glider take a some hard landings, not necessarily a beating, but is it something quite rugged?

Gee, I dunno man...

Somewhere along development we reinforced the wing by going to harder spar material and shear webs on both sides of the spars. So the wing is pretty much bullet proof.

The fuselage pod is small, fiberglass, and reinforced by the servo tray and the tail tube is carbon fiber. The tail surfaces are not built up structure, but sheet balsa.

So the Kunai isn't a lead sled, but it's light weight and pretty stout for what it's intended to do in the air.

I think it would be just about difficult to have a hard landing anyway. With a little exponential and with spoilerons extended you can set it down light as a feather - or without spoilerons, just have to come in a little farther out or land a little long.

How bad of a pilot are you?

Tim

Interesting ....

Haven't heard of this plane until I received the preorder email today.

Looks pretty cool. I have been looking at the Astra from Esprit models
But it's got a 84" wing. This looks like a smaller version without flaps

Good price. I hope this means GP will be putting out an F5j
Model or perhaps a 55" Rifle.

Great looking plane! / good price

How well have the aileron control linkages held up during landing tests? They look like they are sticking out there kinda far...

(pre) Ordered! and looking forward to it.

It'll be replacing a Dynamic-S that has bravely withstood some... learning experiences. (I think the DS is about to get lights -- night flights would be a nice way to semi-retire this plane.)
