That is certainly normal. I remember one of the first things I ever heard about Hortens is that you have to fly them fast. I have caught a thermal with a Horten, but it wasn't easy. Flying fast solves a lot of problems. This includes landing fast. Trying to slow it down for a hand catch would really be a challenge. Also, I keep all maneuvers positive G and avoid yaw inducing tricks such as hammer head stall turns.
