I've been firmly convinced the venturi effects upon the fuselage openings at launch speed as well as the non-linearity of the altitude vs. absolute pressure relationship (abs pressure what we actually measure) lead to improper absolute altitude response, especially when starting at ABQ altitude. An approximation of the altitude as a function of pressure response is: alt[ft] = 145366.45*(1 - (pressure[mbar]/1013.25)^0.190284) Tom, I'll give you an adapter to go in-line our Deans micros so we can do side-by-side. Relative accuracy will by rather high and something we can trust - the 235' is largely untrustworthy given the launch velocities and our starting altitude. But that fu**er was goin' pretty high! -Matt

Launching a DLG can create a large negative pressure spike inside the fuse, resulting in an artificially high altitude blip with a How-High or similar max alt recorder. Get a recording altimeter, i.e. RAM3, level off after peaking, and travel horizontally. Examine that trace and estimate your launch height. Even then, you can be off ± 10 ft. It doesn't matter how high the plane climbs, it's at which altitude you start horizontal flight. And what really matters is that you're throwing higher than anyone else around!

Tom,

don't you New Mexicans fly balloons all the time? At least that's what your Tourism Board is telling me. Have a buddy hover at 200 ft. and launch towards him. He could even dangle a 50 ft. yardstick. Another buddy could film it all from another balloon.

New DLG event - have a quad heli hover over the field at 200 ft., gyro and GPS stabilized, and launch toward it. First one to touch wins.

Hope to see you in February - what's your backup plane?

Tom is launching great, and we are right up there with each other. Having a blast. The launch height doesn't even matter, we had a great time. And Tom gets schooled I'm sure we'll both be there in February to show you pesky AZians how the gliders are supposed to be flown. One of these days...we'll figure it out....hopefully before Feb.
