Question
How to add gussets?

Ok next question. I need to add some gussets to my rudder.
Do I glue to the trailing edge and ribs and sand back or glue in between the ribs?

Whats the best method?

First, why do you think you need gussets. Any weight you add in the tail is "Bad"

Second, if you need gussets it is best to glue them in while building the structure. Right now you have glue blobs in the way. You will have to 'notch' the gussets to clear the glue.

Third, make sure you cut the gussets with the grain in the right direction (diagonal).

1. Because it's a scale vintage glider I want the gussets to show under the covering as per the plans.

2. I realise that I've made an error and should have built them whilst building the structure. This has answered my question.

Thanks for the advice on the grain

You only show the fin in your picture, where is the rudder you are talking about?

Grunau Baby

It looks like a Grunau Baby rudder.
If you look at my building gallery you can find some rudder pictures.

Don't know if this applies to your situation, but most full scale structures add thin ply gussets over the structure, tying the TE to Ribs etc. If all you want is the look of full scale try using thin card stock gussets, both sides.

I've got a 1/2 scle project in planning. 1/32 birch ply will be too heavy for the balsa strip ribs (scale truss). I've decided card stock gussets from a file folder, in a neutral buff shade, will do just fine.

Could that be a Kadet rudder?

Justy, no error, you still can make the gussests by gluing these in the corners there where you want. Just use pieces of balsa, 1.5 a 2 mm and sand these.
A problem would be if you still want to make capstrips on the ribs, we normally glue these ON the ribs and than combine these with the gussets, but when that's not needed your method is the easiest method when it's just for view as you say. Now you don't have to cut in the ribs.

1/64 ply will be too thick to be scale for what you're doing if the hinge pins are any indicator. Yes the full scale stuff did use such gussets but I believe that it was roughly 1/32 thick. So depending on the scale you're building to.......

1/64" ply might be too thick but it creates the perfect illusion. By the time you add the Stix-It, dope or whatever else is used for adhering the fabric (which has too coarse of a weave for scale purists, BTW) the edges of the ply get a nice fillet which makes them less pronounced. So... build on, justy g!!!!

That's an excellent point about the illusion ARUP. I forgot for a moment that some such details don't scale well and we have to underplay some and emphasize others to make them look right on a model.
