Rice worried by Putin's broad powers

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071013/...us_russia_rice

What a joke. She licks the boot of the Unitary Presidency fro many years now and questions an independent judiciary. Can we say 2000?

[[[[[Earlier, Rice said she hoped the efforts of rights activists would promote universal values of "the rights of individuals to liberty and freedom, the right to worship as you please, and the right to assembly, the right to not have to deal with the arbitrary power of the state."]]]]]]]]]]]

Take the moat out of your own eye so you can then help others remove theirs. Chickens are coming home to roost all over the world. Bush needed to win a raspberry award, the opposite of the peace award. He is almost solely responsible for the heightened authoritarian state of the world.

Well that's a little harsh, Russia has always held onto the "shadow" of the past and now they've found a Putin to bring it home again.
I say Bin Laudin and even Sadam are more responsible for the heightened Authoritarian state of the world. (even Hugo, Castro and Ahmadinejad are leaders in this.)
Bush just confronted it without realizing the depths of its roots and fear of it's oppressed masses.
Don't you really want to see a democratic government in Iraq and a real one in Russia as well?

doesn't matter what anyone wants when the reality is that it will never happen no matter how much is spent in trying to acheive it.

As soon as Bush starts making noises on how he will game the system to maintain his personal power after his two terms are up, you might have a point.

Didn't you read where he said he would run a "big think tank", make speeches to "replenish the ol' coffers" and dirt bag, er bike his life away.......too bad he didn't decide to to that in 2000.

I doubt that the words "Big" "Think" and "Bush" can actually be used in a sentence without God actually laughing.

In any case, unless think tanks are actually anything more than think tanks, not quite the same level as being prime minister.

While I agree there is a certain irony in Ms. Rice's words, there are very significant differences between Mr. Bush's over-reaching and the status of Russia's institutions. I have no doubt our judiciary and (most) media is independent; it is a genuine question in Russia.

Exactly. Some just don't get that, and apparently never will.

Having a dream that is realistic is fine.

Having a dream that is unattainable is pointless, and in this particular case has cost tens of tousands of human lives, untold suffering of the innocent and a gazillion dollars - all wasted.

Those aren't dreams - those are nightmares. Right, Bill?

I sure feel good for most of you, who are so terrified of Bush, because he won't be around in about a year.

On the other hand, Putin, a person some here admire so much for his democracy values, has managed to appoint himself into an even higher position after he leaves the position from which he can't be elected again.

So don't anybody worry, in a year, Bush will be gone and all the rest of the world will be just as you want it... without Bush.
Then everyone can loosen up their panties out of the wad they're in and be at peace because the most dangerous person in the entire history of the world will have passed into, well, history.

Phew, that was a close one, eh?
