HobbyKing Quanum DIY FPV Goggle Set with Monitor (KIT)

Hi,

this Quanum DIY FPV Goggle Set with Monitor kit just showed up in HobbyKing store.

Description:

At a very decent(I would say) price (30$+shipping), this kit looks to be very promising, since this is not only the foam kit, but it also includes the monitor itself, and 3 Fresnel lenses to accommodate different viewing distance.
For FPV beginners it will be an absolutely knock off, since the goggles are priced way too high comparing to this one.

The specs seem to be fair for the price you pay:

Monitor screen: NON-Blue screen custom TFT LCD
Screen size: 4.3in (6:9 or 4:3 switchable) (I think they mistyped 6:9 and should be 16:9)
Format: PAL/NTSC supported
Supply voltage: 7~13V
Resolution: 480p
Fresnel lens: 3X and 4X included
Size: 140x95x120mm
Weight: 195g

The resolution listed as 480p means it has at least 480 horizontal tv lines.
At 4:3 ration the resolution should be 480*4/3=640x480, while at 16:9 ratio the resolution formula returns 480*16/9=854x480.

Update: HobbyKing edited the product specs, after a while, and stated the resolution is 480 px width. That means a much lower resolution than I have explained above, even lower than the Fatshark's 640x480. Still the price was so attractive that this kit went in Backorder in just less than 24 hours.

HobbyKing videos on this:
HobbyKing Daily - Quanum DIY FPV Goggle (5 min 57 sec)

HobbyKing Live - Quanum DIY FPV Goggle Build Video (16 min 55 sec)

Just ordered one kit to see what it looks like. But what do you think?

I saw it.

this is just a monitor mounted on your head. I think such a big thing will be pretty heavy after some time.

But it is cheap...

No, not really.
I mocked up a set and they are not bad at all.
Was going to build my own, but my hands shake a bit and my eyesight is a joke at that close range so I gave up.
I would buy these in a hot tick.

I use Mareks version. The 5" version is coming out soon.
you can tell that Marek put some thought into this.

Hi, can anyone explain what the advantage of the non-blue screen is? I have never flown FPV so I don't know, but now it seems like when you lose signal it goes to a static screen in stead of blue? What's the benefit? Why would I not for example just buy a cheap LCD from ebay and build my own sweet headmount? Cheers!

Or is the static just as a warning BEFORE you lose signal? Would you be able to build in that feature yourself?

Bluescreen activates much more before complete loss of signal. It also takes a lot more time to recover from bluescreen to normal image. That means that if your signal will drop for a very short moment at close distance, this short moment will become longer, sometimes very important when flying low and fast, especially near objects.
With non bluescreen you will have the ability to fly thru static until the signal fades completely, while with regular lcd that goes to bluescreen you will be able to fly with good signal only.

Looks like they changes the description to 480px(w). I'm assuming they will be 480x272 like most of the cheap 4.3"ers

Thanks, explains a lot. Is there a way to tell if an LCD features blue screen or not? e.g. http://www.ebay.com/itm/360954187982...84.m1423.l2649, is it safe to assume because it is cheap it will feature this problem?

As far as I know, there is no way to tell if a monitor goes to blue screen. The only way to know is to test, if this is not listed in specs, or if somebody tested before.
Usually car monitors do feature blue screen function. New model tv/monitors have the possibility to switch it on or off.

Yeah... Another fool day from HK. I will keep the order thogh...

The resolution ends up with:
480x360 for 4:3 aspect ratio
480x270 for 16:9 aspect ratio

This seems like a good solution for me, despite the low res. It's low cost, around $40 shipped to me.

I currently have a 7" TFT screen but it is very hard to see in bright sunlight because of the glare. This could help a lot - but I'd like to see some hand on reviews first.
