Build Log
Life after AerodromeRC - new DR.1 build thread

Just got word that i have a new kit coming to work on. I always wanted to build a Fokker Dr.1 but waited too long to get the kit from AerodromeRC. I did, however, get the plans. But I was stymied by trying to figure out how to get the parts cut. After looking at scroll saws, internet articles on cutting balsa and asking on forums, I realized my skills were not sufficient to precisely cut the parts.
Suffering from a bit of depression. Then, I got lucky. I remembered a guy here in Dallas that did some work for me on a case building a model of a cabin. He owns an architectural model making company and, more importantly, has a state of the art laser printer. He agreed to cut my parts for me! I cannot wait.

Stay tuned for my second ever build log.
(Not sure if you can tell how excited I am.)

Jon,
Don't worry. I have not forgotten about the Albatros and DVII. I was a bit intimidated by the wood covering for the Albatross and afraid my wife would freak at the size of the DVII. She was in the workroom last week and remarked that I had a lot of planes stacking up. Fortunately, she has no idea what the stack of balsa is eventually going to be.

Mike - your excitement over an upcoming build is marvellous - what the hobby should be about rather than whining about forum splits etc
Great that you can get the parts cut - pity the cut files are not available..

I'm looking forward to another of Kay's creations here on rcg - and wife will understand about being home cutting balsa and not out on the town ............

Pat

In anticipation of the build, I've been collecting the essentials. I plan to use a pull-pull set up for elevator and rudder since it worked, and was relatively easy, in my DVII. Has anyone tried using a pull-pull for the ailerons? Just wondering since I think it would also be cool.
The kit is the 35" wing span - if I recall correctly - since I do not have the space to hide bigger stuff from the significant other.
This may be changing though. I recently showed her a photo I took from the flying field of a fellow who had a trailer bigger than his smart car to carry his plane. I am working on her bit by bit.

Nytjadens - I am excited about the cut parts too. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to do it myself. I remember working on kits with my father - the old Guillows - and never having success with them. The guy doing the cutting for me is excited about it too.

My fingers are crossed, I have plans for the AerodromeRC DVII, DVIII and Albatros DIII in 1/6 scale and I want to build them all!

Hi Mike - I used pull/pull on my 1/6 Rake D.VII ailerons- it has performed flawlessly. Here is a link to around where it is described:
