I've been wondering if there is any replacement to Balsa wood for building planes. The best i could come across is Paulownia Wood. And Of course The Composites. Paulownia is good but not accessible in India (thats where i'm!). So does any one know any good Composites that could replace balsa? Kevlar is good but too expensive!

RC planes have been built from fibreglass for many years. Tends not to be used for 3d models (other than cowls and wheel pants etc) as it can get heavy, but for sport, speed and scale mode fibreglass is very common.

And of course carbon fibre is very widely used in high stress areas.

The EXP series uses G10 composite material for landing gear blocks, motorbox strengthening, control horns, etc. It's nearly as strong as carbon, though a little heavier. It's much less expensive though.

Yep, G10 is just a type of fibreglass. It doesn't really 'replace' balsa though, it's more for reinforcement of high stress areas.

One thing that has replaced balsa to a large extent in modern ARF's is plywood. Much of the structure in most ARF's is plywood (probably Basswood or Birch?) usually about 1.5 - 2.0mm thick and with extensive laser cut lightening holes to make it even lighter than balsa would have been.
