Edge 540 at airshow

At airshow with my son and saw two planes that caught my eyes.
One was Edge 540 doing amazing maneuvers. So now I want one! Which brand/style is a good Edge 540 to get? Looking for large (44" or bigger).

Finally, what plane is the second photo?

??? ...unsure about that. has "PEMBERTON" (which happens to be the pilot's name) written on the left hand wing

Pic 1) Melissa Pemberton's recently-ish repainted Edge
Pic 2) Extra 300L as airportdog mentions. N512DW... I don't think it's Patty's. Looks to be the gent in the flight suit standing in front of it.

If you want one that looks like the Edge pictured (single place canopy at least), and performs in the upper regions of "awesome"...

I like the 48" a little better because of transportation issues and not being pricy….Those 60" birds get super expensive

Out of curiosity is there a reason for the pinocchio type spinners on aerobatic aircraft?

They have to cover the prop governor.

Well that just lead to an interesting few minutes googling and reading. From what I found it seems that the actual governor is back on the engine, and what's up in the hub/ spinner area is just the mechanism for feathering the blades?

Correct. There is a piston inside the prop hub. Oil is ported through the crankshaft to move the piston in the hub one way or the other, which moves the blades.

The spinner does look unproportionally large though. I think it's that the airframe is small for such a large engine and prop.

you also have to consider which type prop they are running affects spinner areas, wether McCauley, Hartzell, MT and that hartzell props have a counter weight arm on blade that has to move inside spinner as prop transtions. The propellers most single engine planes run is controllable but not full feathering, only high and low pitch. Unless it is a turbine engine, then full feathering and reversible.

Bill

Also prop governors are what control prop movement by controlling oil flow to prop, uses speeder spring set up in side housing for rpm control. All prop governors are engine mounted accessories either up front on crankcase or rear mounted on acessorie pad
