goes to show - we can't expect to be separated from manned aircraft traffic at even 500 feet. Copter was cruising at ~500 ft.

IMO the helicopters was in the wrong..
First how do we know the helicopter was not under 400 ft?
Next ,, why was the helicopter not over 1000 ft?
God Bless America ,, where ever it is?

Guy was out in an open field well away from the three airports in the area.

First; the sheriff stated 550' agl. Why do you doubt he's being truthful?
Second; Helicopters are not covered by the FAA's minimum height restriction. See 14 CFR, part 91.119 (d)(1).

Here's what annoys me about the story..
"... pilot Johnny Reyes spotted what he thought was a large bird in front of the helicopter. Moving closer, Reyes realized that the object was a small aircraft. He swerved and the drone, with a large wingspan, flew over the top of the helicopter, missing it by about 20 feet."

It sure reads like the heli piloted spotted something they thought was a bird, purposely
approached it, and only then was surprised to learn it wasn't a bird. My question is, what if
it was a large bird? Why would it have been any more appropriate to purposely
approach it? They don't always do predicable things, and the threat is the same to
the heli. There have been other instances where heli pilots have
basically chased after drones and then claimed it was a near miss.

I do wonder why the RC pilot didn't hear the heli coming and get down low though. I've
never had trouble hearing a full scale aircraft approaching from a mile or two away.

Might have been flying with audio in both ears.

Anything is possible, but I've never met an FPV pilot who flies with headphones on.
Even if you're not listening for full scale aircraft (which anyone flying near
an urban area would be), you still wanna hear if there are people around you on the
ground. I regularly chat with random strangers who walk up to me while I'm flying. It'd be pretty
freaky to fly in audio-isolation. Heck, last time someone walked up on us while we were flying,
it was a cop. Handed him my passenger goggles, and kept flying. He thought it was really cool.

I tend to fly one- ear audio just for that reason.

Wouldn't the heli's rotor wash just knock the drone out of its flight path?

If it flew over the heli by 20 feet. You would think it get drawn into the rotor. Goes to show the cops like harrassing birds. Why was that low anyhow, if it had engine problems they wouldnt have enough height to a autorotate landing.

Not really. And if you read the story, the heli pilot claims the RC aircraft was above him.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a bigger agenda behind the actions of this heli pilot. What if the heli pilot flew intentionally to close to the RC plane when he spotted, or even followed it. That way he has a better point, and a better reason to harass the RC pilot.
