Build Log
Yardbird Balsa and fiberglass Pod

I'm getting ready to build a Yardbird wing from Mountain Models. But first I thought I would build a balsa Pod for it.

I bought the short kit from Mountain Models a few weeks ago along with a Boom for a Bubble Dancer.

As with everything I build I have to change things and personalize them. Why you ask! I don't know just something inside my head that says lets do this a different way.

So when I received the kit the first thing I did was look at the plans and decide what I could change. Nothing against you Darth your plans and work are terrific. And I couldn't be doing what I'm about to do without your expertise and build logs.

So I took out the plan and re-drew it. Seeing how I'm a retired Senior Design Engineer that wasn't very hard to do. I shortened the wing 10 ". Why I don't know. I did this by moving all the ribs about 1/8" closer together. The center section of the wing will remain unchanged but a little shorter. The mid section will be one rib shorter and the ribs closer and the tip section will be one rib longer and have less of an angle from the LE to the tip while the TE will have a little more angle to the tip.

But before I start on the wing I'm building a Pod for it that I saw Tom from the Czech Rep build a few years ago. I looked at the pictures of what he did and drew up a plan for the Pod. It's basically two halves. Just like building a boat.

It's all balsa with 1/2" plywood for the wing pedestal and wing mount hold down covered with fiberglass and will be painted to match the wing.

I've been taking pictures as I build so the pictures I'm showing may not be in the correct order.

The Pod and boom is done along with the Tail Feathers which I drew plans for based on the Bubble Dancer and the Yardbird. I still have to do a little more sanding on the Pod to make it ready for paint but basically it's done.

Hopefully I'll start on the wing next week. I'll post pictures of that as I get going.

So here's some pictures of the Pod. Enjoy. I'll probably have to post the pictures in a couple segments.

Thanks guys. Here's a couple pictures of the tail feathers with the pod and boom just for kind of a visual.

I gotta ask, why shorten the wing? I love the pod, and almost did the same exact thing on my Yardbird. But why shorter?

I'd like to take that 10" and add it to my Yardbird's span.
