Giant scale X-2 project!

In honor of Jean “Skip” Ziegler, Lt. Colonel Frank K. "Pete" Everest, Capt. Iven C. Kincheloe, and Capt. Milburn G "Mel" Apt I have decided to build a 1/5th scale X-2. This model will be powered with a high “K” to a low “M”.
I am planning on flying this at Balls in September, but I may have it ready for LDRS in July.

Hi Frank,

Right now I’m estimating it to weigh around 30 pounds without the motor.
I’ll calculate the C/G envelope and see if I can stay within limits during the motor burn. This worked well on my ME-163 and X-30 projects.

I hope that works out, looks like you are going with a full flying tail, that will probably help allow a somewhat larger trim for range for post boost CG as well. My smaller X2(which has no fuse area and flat plate wing) lives with a 3.2%(relative to fuse length, forget what the wing chord is) CG shift without issue.

You'll be over 10:1 at liftoff with the smallest on M's, the AT M1297, at ~450lbf initial thrust. I'm assuming a 75mm motor tube? Very cool project indeed. I need to get back to Blackrock, the east coast is like the black hole of real high power rocketry.

Yes it’s a 3-inch mount. Right now my guess is that the first flight would be on an “L”. Once it’s complete and I have a final empty weight I can do the math and see if I can tolerate the C/G change with bigger motors.
If I do go with an “M” I’d use something with a gentler ride, like an AT M650, Hypertek M740 or a Loki M900.

Even at 30lb it seems the K560 would be needed to keep it visible for the flight back. This project poses some unique challenges. Cal poly did something similar for a reusable booster project. They had big models and had to use M1939's so to get the CG in front of the CP they put water in the nose. When the model arched over the water fell out and the CG moved forward for flight.

I’m planning to fly a 3in rocket on an M1400 at Balls as well.
As you know drag is a big issue. My 7 1/2 in Nike Smoke went to 6415 on an M1315 at 47 pounds loaded. The X2 is almost 11inches in diameter; I’ll have to see what the final weight of this thing is prior to committing to a motor. I have considered the water ballast idea before and it is a good one. I have managed to fly a 10 foot long X30 and a 5 foot wingspan Me163 by just be working within the allowable C/G envelope. If I can do that with the X-2 I will, otherwise I’ll go the water route.

I really want to go to Balls this year but I don’t think my work schedule will allow it. It probably won’t be until 2013 or 2014 before I make it back to the playa. What rocket are you flying the M1400 in? I love minimum Diameter rockets; they are all I fly now. I am addicted to speed and altitude. My current project is a 4" that I am going to try and break the N-class altitude record with on a CTI N5800. My dad and I are also working on a 102mm minimum diameter rocket that will fly on one of Frank Kosdon's (RIP) O6000 motors. It will be a fitting tribute flight for Frank. We are hoping to get around 60k ft. at a little over Mach 4. Sorry for getting off topic, I don’t get to talk rockets much anymore. I'm an aeronautical engineer stuck in a civil engineers career .

I’m still finalizing my design for the 3in rocket. I got the motor case and the altimeters. I have plenty of time to get this done but the X2 is going to take some time.
I just couldn’t go out to Black Rock without punching a hole in the sky, hopefully not the playa.
