Great Planes Ultimate Bipe 40

Hi Guys

Doing my first kit build with this plane. I purchased it about 4 years ago and it has just sat there doing nothing as it looked quite complicated. Have also realized that doing kit builds is actually more expensive (unless you have all the tools) than doing an ARF. Have nearly finished the build, with the exception of opening the cowl for the motor and covering the plane. I will be flying this off floats. I am confused as to which way to go with the engine. I have a Magnum xl52 (2T), Magnum xl70(4T) and a NGH 9cc (gas). Which one should I go with to ensure I get it off the water and get some oomph from it?

Thanks, Sandy

Go with the Magnum 70 and a 12-6 prop.

Thanks for the input. Any particular reason why? This is my first 4-stroke and it does sound a lot nicer, however I can't find any power / RPM's for either motor.
Regards, Sandy

Well my personal thing is that I just think a two stroke (or worse a motor) on a bipe is just wrong, but besides that a good 4 stroke will pull it hard without over working and it will run about 1/3 less in expensive nitro fuel.

Thanks Cherokee, I had no idea that the 4 stroke used that much less fuel. With nitro locally costing about $US50 per gallon, it is a good motivation. Will go with that option. Regards, Sandy

Wow I thought I had it bad at $25 a gallon. Lots of guys pay $10-$15 dollars a gallon normal price.

I currently live in the Dominican Republic, only 1 hobby shop on the island.... So the only options is sea-freight (45 day lead time) or the hobby shop. Being from England and hating having cold feet, I can balance up the cost of thermal underwear against the additional cost of buying nitro....
