Robert, can you explain how Kompmen's hawk can fly without the front flap things, but your seagull cannot? What is the critical difference between the two designs?

Lovely bird! I'll have to add that to my must have list.

Why not make the vertical surface out of transparent plastic material? Just to make it a little bit more realistic.

I think the transparent plastic would be more heavy. In addition, from the land model looks very realistic with a white vertical tail surfaces.

also about the Twin Boom design, the reason is smacking the engine down the center of the plane for safety reasons, that leave some structural issues so I've decided to split it and go around it like the S-39 layout , the downside is it makes the plane more noisy . expect a screaming Bird

Hey guys, I am building the 56" version of the FFF Eagle. I actually am using 5mm Cellfoam 88 and 3mm cellfoam (plus some 2" foam in the nose I carved.
I have been searching through this huge thread for numbers and I just want to double check with you guys if I have them right.
I should be shooting for an AUW of 20-27 oz?
CG should be from 2.25" -3" from LE.
And how are you bending the wing tips? Just carefully heating and bending up or rolling over a tube? I saw that someone just cut them off, sanded an angel into it and glued them back on. Sounds easy enough.

I used a hair dryer and a muffin tin, with VERY SLOW CAREFUL application of force. That Cell foam is brittle and can suddenly snap. A cut, angle tip can be easier, but if you want a more realistic look in flight, go for the curved tips. You could also use a different foam board for the wing tips, like dollar tree foam or Elmers foam board. These have paper clad surfaces, but it can be removed by soaking in water and rolling/rubbing it off. The foan dos not have that hard burnished surface finish like the Cellfoam, but so it's not as rigid and more compliant with heated bending.

I've got loads of that DollarTree foam board but haven't used any in awhile. I prefer the CellFoam though if I have a choice but I have never bent it like I am going to this time.

I just put what I have on the scale, fuse/wings/motor/esc and all ply pieces comes in at 10.5 oz so I think I am on the right track. I'll set my goal at 20 oz I think. Or should I shoot for a bit less?

+1 on the heat and carefully bend method. However, if left like this, they can tend to flatten out again over time, especially if left somewhere hot. (if your model lasts that long). They are also quite easy to break on landings. I have two methods to help here:-

1)Cut a vertical slot in the tip feather and insert a thin (1mm) ply spar, which is shaped to the right bend radius.

or

2) Having bent the cell foam, cover top and bottom with paper, applied with wallpaper paste or similar.

Images attached show the ply inserts on some larger tips, that were then covered over with 3mm depron (cell foam) on top, but the principle works just as well on single thickness foam, if the ply is cut flush with the surfaces.
