north sf bay slopers... general thread

Hi Guys,
Well, I've been meaning to do this for a while, but haven't got around to it yet. However, today's events made me finally do it, so hopefully we can help avoid the same confusion in future.

Magicsteve and I went out to four corners today to get some sloping in, and the wind and lift were just epic. a little later, two more showed up. apparently there were a few guys out at tick, where there was apparently no wind at all. so they called the guys that were still at tick, and told them to get the hell up to four corners for some of the awesome lift we had going on up there.

However, about ten minutes later it started raining. Magicsteve and I hunkered under some bushes for a while to see if it would stop, but it didn't look like it would be stopping within a reasonable timespan, so we packed up and left. Never saw anyone else show up there before we left, but if any of you guys came up from tick to fly there I'm guessing you were a little dissapointed.

Anyway, I was thinking it would be a good idea to set up a marin/north bay sloper thread, as I couldn't find any other dedicated threads out there where we could discuss the conditions and where we plan to be flying. I'm thinking this thread will help us all understand where we're all planning to fly, so we can have more people at the best spot possible. I might also be able to set up a method that would allow me to place a small "weather station" (a watertight box with an anemometer attached to it and a 4g internet connected mini-server inside)at each site that could automatically post weather updates to the thread, so we know where the best conditions are (currently just at the start of that project, but it's coming along ok. Anyway, if you guys want to post your plans and what you've found forecast-wise, so we can all find the best lift possible, that would be awesome. and I guess some OT chat is tolerable if we can't avoid it :P.
see you guys at the slope!

conditions for this weekend: friday looks pretty cloudy, with the winds about 10-12kts in the morning, increasing to 15 to 20kts in the afternoon. saturday looks sunnier, but with a little less wind (5-7kts in the morning, picking up to 12-15 in the late afternoon), and sunday will be about the same as saturday but with a little less wind. This is based off noaa, accuweather, and theweatherchannel.com, as the "live update anemometer" is still a work in progress.

I look at the above site for weather predicitions at Tick

This one below is good, too. If arrows are paralleling the coast at the Muir Beach overlook or so, the wind is probably coming up the slope, not parallel to it.

The Zero maiden will be in a week. It will need some solartex, a couple servo rails (hot glued in...you try that before?), three clevises, and a canopy mount wire.
Does it make sense to edit my one and only post here so there won't be pages of BS, just one page of BS (depending on how many people post. I've been whiffing too much bond-o tonight to think this through.

Bacon; interesting progress you're making with the wind-phone

I just got back from Tick, completely fogged in. Forgot to check the muir beach webcam, here

When is that Zero going to be ready, Dave? You should be ready to test fly it pretty soon.

If anyone can set up an anometer to a phone-thingy, you'd have many takers.
thanks! those are useful links. I'm currently working on setting up a cheap hobbyking anemometer, connected to an arduino with a 3g shield. tricky part is powering it, I'm looking at either a little windmill or solar. should be a very useful tool if I can get it working, as we wouldn't have to guess about the wind based on general predictions anymore.
P.S. I always use hot glue on my servos... mainly because I can't be bothered to use anything else

Great idea here! Like Mike, it's a bit of a haul to the better flying locations and having a means of knowing what the conditions are like before setting out would be great. Also, it wouldn't hurt to know that there may be others to fly with too!

Thanks,

Rob

sun just came out and the wind seems decent (here at least, which is usually the same conditions as four corners, not sure about tick though) I probably can't make it up there this weekend, but the conditions look pretty good.

lift was INSANE at fc today, probably 30 knots. pretty turbulent though, we only flew the zagi and the mpx easyglider pro. I might be up again tomorrow depending on conditions.
