Build Log
Tethered Trainer RC 'Herbie'

Just printed plans. It will be like light weight vintage sport. Just decided to cheat a bit and enlarged plans, wing specially is 10% bigger compared to fuse. In pic is Saito FA-100 and 1 meter scale. Going to add ailerons. Airfoil will be Clark Y. In plans airfoil is not shown right. The original wing is very small and 10% bigger nobody would notice if not told. Love the racer looks. Canopy area is just like Hughes H-1 racer.
Goal is simple and beautiful old time racer. Saito can pull this plane limitless vertical, but the plane will need the the nose weight anyway. Prop will something about 16x4w or similar. You get the idea. Wooden prop would be nicer, need to search.
Big wheels between 4,5-6 inch. Need to check which looks best.
I just think this beautiful design needs to be built.
Span will be 196cm or 77inch...

Cheers

Jukka

Hi durad,
I agree, the Tethered Trainer is a beautiful little plane.

But, before you start cutting wood, have a look at the various versions of the "Stanzel Shark".
I think there are some on Outerzone. It's virtually the same design as the TT, which I think was copied from the Shark, but it's not important for us anyway.
I think the Shark exists in several sizes and there are already excellent RC versions and drawings. This is only from memory, so don't be too cross if I'm wrong!

Stanzel Shark is beautiful model. Ones started with wing, but then moved to new home and it got damage too much. Some how i like more from this Tethered Trainer.
Need to order more wood and covering material. But i can already start to make the hard parts first.

I do think many of these old time control line planes would make good R/C planes. I have been thinking the same thing with the Box Car Chief. Ugly as sin but beautiful in its own way. This one flys well with a Super Cyclone on ignition. I have been flying it on 58' lines but I think I will go to 65'.

Durad and Jeff, I thought you would have everything, so I didn't bother before.
The TT article (pdf) and various other stuff is here. I've tried to upload my plans, but they're .tif and the RCG upload is refusing.
I downloaded the article years ago from a site called the Plans Page (I think), and the other stuff came from Uncle Willie's, with some help from Derick Scott also.
Note that the beautiful orange TT, admired by everyone, is Italian, built by Gabriele Macri almost 10 years ago.
