HZ Super Cub - 3s Lipo really OK? Prop?

In the giant Ultimate Super Cub threads, people mention using a 3s Lipo with the Super Cub. will it's 480 motor really hold up to a 3S, or are these people just OK with/expecting 10 flights from it?

This thread says a particular 1320mah will fit in the stock compartment. Will most 1300's then? It says some use 2100-2200 after cutting away some of the compartment for it to fit. I really don't need that big, and I want to keep it light anyway. So is 1300 the biggest that will fit without modification? I'm not at home to check, but at some store pages for the stock 7 cell 1000mah HBZ1013, seems it weighs 5.2oz/147g, so even a 1300mah Zippy could make it a whole ounce lighter.

So will these fit and work OK?
Zippy Flightmax 15-25C 1300
Zippy Flightmax 20C 1300
Zippy Ec 20C 1300

Or a 1000mah to lighten it up even more?
Zippy Flightmax 15C 1000
Zippy 25C 1000
Or even an 800mah
Zippy Flightmax 20C 800

Just curious, will any of these 1500mAh fit?
Mystery 15C 1500
Zippy 20C 1500

Also, in that same thread I linked, it mentions needing to prop down from the 10x8, and they chose a 10x6. Is this a good idea or necessary, and is a 10x6 the best choice?

Hi Brian,

It looks like they would all fit except the Zippy 2oc 1500. I fly with a 1320, 1500, and 2200. The 1320 fits in the original compartemtn while the 1500 and 2200 both slide in perpendicular as I cut out a hole in the plastic battery compartment near the front of the plane ( no foam is removed just cutting a hole in the plastic holder) so that the larger batteries slide in snugly. I fly mine with the stock motor and I put probably 120 flights on before the motor started to go. They are cheap to replace though.

As far as weight and keeping it light I find the 1320 is almost too light as I like a bit more weight in it. I also fly almost all my flights with a 5 oz camera strapped on the bottom and the supercub with lipos has no problem carrying it around for 12-15 min.

Hope this helps

Rob

Hi Brian,

I'm one of the numerous people who've actually done testing with the 3s Li-Po's.

The Super Cub with stock motor, prop, and 7 cell NiMh batteries pulls right in the neighborhood of 8.2 amps and uses about 57 watts of power.

The Super Cub with stock motor, 3s Li-Po, and a "GWS 10x6 DD Direct Drive" pulls around 8.4 amps, and uses about 91 watts of input power.

This means the motor is still using it's designed for amp draw.... but the benefit of Li-Pos is that with a 5 ounce camera aboard, it'll take off in about 20-25 feet of runway...

Rob said it Brian. 3S lipo in stock SC is the way to go for lots more performance, about 90 watts instead of stock 60 watts. Lots of us use a 10/6 DD prop for less amp draw and more thrust, but raz says a 10/8 for more speed works just fine. Icky

Edit: Chuck always has the details

If you use the 10x6 as mentioned above you can use a 3-cell Li-Po with out any problems.
My dad has a Super Cub with the GWS 10x6 prop and a 1500mah 3-cell Li-Po. It is several ounces lighter and has twice the power of the stock battery.
Upgrading to a li-po is with out a doubt the best upgrade you can do.

Would this TGS Sport prop be as good as a GWS DD? This person says they seem to perform better than APC props.

Or would an APC draw too much current for this application? If so, Dr. Kiwi says the TGS/EMP draws even more than an APC E (but with more thrust). Looks like he hasn't tested the TGS/EMP 10x6 props yet, but didn't know if anyone had already tried one on the stock Super Cub motor to see.

Or, does anyone know anything about any of these that bidproduct sells?

I have been flying my SC with the stock motor / gearbox on 3s lipos for close to a year. I finally replaced the motor just because I thought it might be getting close to dying but it was still going strong. I was NOT using the stock prop though, I used the Eflite 10x8 prop which draws a few less amps.

I'm using the Rhino 1350, and 1500mAh 20c 3cells from Hobbycity.com in my stock super cub. Stock prop, stock motor, stock radio system, 50+ flights and still haven't fried anything, I get 20+ minute flights at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle with the 1350, and more with the 1500, almost full vertical climb with either battery.
