Need advice on brushless on GWS Formosa

I want to build a GWS Formosa for my next plane. I wanted to give it plenty of power and speed. Has anyone set up a Formosa with a 11V LiPoly and a brushless motor? If so, what type motor and ESC have you used? Did you have to make any mods to balance the CG? How does it fly etc?

Any other advice would be appreciated! Thanks

I used a brushless MiniAC 16 in GWS box but NiMH's not Lipos and it was a ROCKET! Was a blast but deff. not restful! Do a search for Formosa!

Try a himax 2015-4100 in the stock gearbox with a phoenix 10 speed controll. On 3s it is more than enough for the formosa. If you dont mind more expensive batteries and shorter flight times a Himax 2025-4200 and phonix 25 will give you enough power to rip the wing off.

The 2025-4200 on 3s pack TP2100, geared 6:1 10x10e prop will not rip the wings off. Pulls 15A static for about 150watts at best before gen1 pack voltage drops. It does fly it very well and flight times are about 17-18 minutes. Vertical is not unlimited but has enough energy to give it a 300-400 ft climb before it runs out of stream. Mine right now is at 20oz and plan on using the gen1 packs since my average amps is around 6. I am goin to throw in a gen2 pack today to compare. Bench tests indicate 18.5A at 10.5V for ~195watts in...no sag either. For what it is worth, Jmolwitz's set up is sick. Even at a hefty weight of 30oz(IIRC) (his newer version) it flies fast and verticals are out of sight in a matter of secs...not for the faint of heart. We will fly side by side sometime soon to see Lighter or heavier prevails.

Jocke with the 10cell pack of roundies what is your AUW?

I fly a profilm covered Formosa with 2025 5300 with a GWS "I" gearbox. The prop is 9x6E APC and vertical is out of sight.

I'll second what Flyingbells stated..... Highmax 2025-5300.... I use the Cobra Gearbox 5:1 with the 9x6E APC.... Out of sight.... I rarely fly it at max... 20 amps static Amps....
See the Formosa thread and you will get lots of answers and see lots of cool Formosas

thanks for all the great advice, I have a few more questions...

The Razor motors are more expensive than Himax. What do you get for the extra money?

Also, I have two 2s 1500mAh LiPolys right now I am running in my current plane on an EPS-350. I would like to use them if possible to save a bunch of $$$. Can I get really good performance out of those packs with a brushless, or do I need to go to 3s? What Himax motor/gearbox/prop combo would run the best off of 2s packs?

I run 2S as well. There are 2 things you could do to make use of them:

1. Get a high wind motor like the Razor 300 or the Himax 2015-5400 or 2025-5300 and use the standard gear ratio (or even a "D" gearing).

2. Use a low gearing like 3:1 and buy a medium wind motor (Razor 350 or 400, Himax 2025-4200 or 2015-4100).

The razors are incredibly light motors and have a slightly higher efficiency than the Himax, but for a price premium.

I have a Razor 300 and a Himax 2025-4200. Both work great with 2S lipos.

Both of those things will make good use of the 2S Lipos

PS: You could always use a small AXI motor for almost silent flights and no gearbox.

I've got a Razor 350, on the stock B gear, in an aluminum housing. Works great, got it all from FlyDMA.com... Excpet the Castle Creations 25, which I bought at a LHS on sale. Works great with my 3s2p pack. Flies reasonably well with the 2s2p 2400 on an APC 9 x 6 slow fly prop (not GWS). Not vertical, but respectable. Long flights and is very light. With the 3s2p pack, I went down to an 8x6 Slow Flyer, and she can hover on a new charge, but not what I want it to do anyway. She just has tons of thrust, but flies nice a fast too. More weight, but not in a bad way. With the 9x6, the power is awsome, climbs at 90 degress and doesn't stop, but it draws about 14 amps, which is not really good for the Razor 350 (9 amp is spec).

Do what you can to make the landing gear strong (Use Epoxy & micro-ballons and really cram it into the cavity and the plastic fitting so it will be rock-solid when it dries). If you are really into touch and goes, then you may want to go to a higher guage wire gear than what is stock.

I have flown a number of brushless/battery combo's in my Formosa. The plane is built fairly light, and has no landing gear.

Himax 2015-4100, CC10, 8 cell KAN 650 pack. "c" gear ratio (5.33), 11-7 GWS HD prop. Flys well, limited vertical. Will do aggressive pattern style aerobatics with energy conservation. About 5 minute flight time.

Same as above but 10-6 GWS HD prop and the following batteries:
Thunder Power 1320 3S (1st gen, I think, a borrowed battery). Good overall performance. Flys much the same as the KAN 650 pack but with far more duration, duh.
Thunder Power 1900 3S (2nd gen). A bit more power. Will do better vertical lines, but still limited.
Thunder Power 2100 3S (2nd gen). About the same performance, maybe a bit less overall performance. I think the battery has become too heavy for the plane/power system. Well over 20 minute flight times. Motor not too hot.

Himax 2025-4200, CC25 with Cobri 5.67 gear ratio and APC 11-7 TE prop. TP 2100. HOLY COW!!! True unlimited vertical. Fast level flight. Plenty of power for this plane. My flying skills will have to improve to fly this combo to it's potential.

Tryed my Formosa with Freestyle 20, 10x8" and 3s KOKAM 2000 HD-S, great power and 20 min flight time, not as powerfull as the 10xFAUP setup but enough pulls easaly out of hover.

Have also tryed the Formosa with Mega 16/15/x not impressed(gets hot, bad trottel respons, no torque)
Pletti Typhoon 15/10, much better than the Mega but not as good as the Freestyle.

3s KOKAM 2000 HD-s
26A
10,8v
only 40 degrees after 20 min of powerfull aerobatic
Freestyle 20 only 30 degrees

A freind flies his with the himax 2025-5300, and the gws 5.33:1 "C" gearbox.. with 3s tanic 850 lipos at around 11 amps I think (130 watts).. apc 8*6 slow fly prop. His airplane is light (14oz) with no lg and can do unlimited vertical, and not even at full throttle. Take off is just to let the plane go.. and off it goes.

Still an easy plane to fly..

I fly mine at the 90 watt level (also 14 oz) with an himax 2015-5400 6.6:1 "D" gear and a slowfly 9*6 prop, around 8 amps with a etecs 1200s 3s lipo.. I'll probably boost power to the max 115w level with the 2015 by using an 9*7 prop and tanic cells. The tanic cells alone boost the power to the 100w level due to their lower internal resistance.

The tanic 3s-850, give plenty of duration, around 10 minutes and thats enough.
