Skyline Yak 55m 60"

Decided to start this thread for two reasons:
1) I've never started a thread
2) I couldn't find any information on a 60" Skyline Yak on RC Groups

I purchased this Yak from General Hobby just for the heck of it as an economical plane to throw in my truck for the occasional flight during my lunch hour. I figured at $158 bucks for the airframe, why not.

Here are some pics of the unboxing, and the build log will follow.

The airframe was packaged nicely, and everything arrived within 5 days undamaged. Hardware looks good and it includes a carbon fiber wing tube.

Stay tuned for more.

Looking forward to the progress. Thinking about getting one of these myself.

What motor/servo's are you going to use?

I'm on a budget for this plane having just completed a very expensive Extreme Flight 91" Yak. No regrets there, it's awesome.

Even though I'm on a budget, I will be using proven brands at a discount.

Motor will be a Tacon Bigfoot 46 (670kv) and I will be running it on 6s LiPo

Servos will be similar specifications as the Hitec 5245MG

I have an 80amp ESC laying around somewhere, so I will repurpose that

Might want to check that motor on 6s. Usually, 6s setups run a lot lower kv, as in 500. You can do it, but not with a 15" prop.

Good point. I will look into that as I would like to use a 16x7 or 15x8

If you're running a 15x8 on 6S, I recommend a 400 - 440kv motor.

Motor Update

Okay, I went ahead and ordered tha Tacon Bigfoot 60 (400kv). This is a 1200 watt motor with similar specs and size to the Hacker A50 14XS that I run in my 64" Extreme Flight MXS. The difference is the Bigfoot costs about a $100 dollars less

Anyways this will be a fun experiment. Hope to post some build pics this weekend. Thanks again for the input guys!

No shame! J/K. I can't wait to try to fly the wings off of it! Literally!

The kit provides 5 Mylar hinges per aileron. My other 60" plane had 4 each.

I also like the fact that each hinge has two holes exactly at the mid way point. This allows for perfect alignment of each hinge, and additional flexibility.

Landing gear

The kit did not provide a typical stainless wheel axle. It provides a black shoulder bolt with two nylock nuts. I had to add a washer to hold the wheel pants up against the gear leg.

The landing gear looks to be a blend between aluminum and carbon fiber. It is cool to the touch like aluminum, but has a grain to it similar to carbon fiber. Either way it is light and strong.

I do like the balsa box used to cover the landing gear mounting plate. Makes a clean installation.

I've hit a couple of speed bumps:

1) the servo openings in each wing are HUGE! I purchased Solar brand servos which are the exact same size (and similar specs) as the HiTec 5245's that I run on my Extreme Flight 64" MXS. They literally fall into the holes on these wings. I will have to modify the opening (shrink it) or order Standard size servos which I believe are overkill for this size plane. Opinions welcomed.

2) the plane comes with split elevators. Again a choice. I can either install two individual servos for each half, or use the provided wooden joiner bar per the instructions and use one servo.

Should have waited for the EF 60" Yak! J/K . Just glue in some light ply pieces on each end of the holes and use the joiner on the elevator. Can't see using two elevator servos on a 60"er.
