Discussion
............................San Luis Obispo Sloping............................

I've decided to create a thread for the general discussion of flying sites in San Luis Obispo and the slope crowd here. I've noticed that a few slopers from the area (myself included) have been coordinating flying at different sites throughout SLO and thought I would dedicate a thread to the entire area, rather than solely Cuesta Ridge (as in the previous thread).

Here is a link to the previous thread which includes some google earth files with markers at many of the slopes here in San Luis Obispo.

I am planning on making a flying trip to either Cayucos or Cuesta ridge on Saturday afternoon. Hopefully I can meet up with at least one of you guys there!

Looking forward to getting more of a regular slope crew together here.

Flying Sites:

Cayucos Hang Glider Hill:

NOAA

Weather Underground (This is the closest station I've found, which is in Cambria. I would check this and the one in Morro Bay / Los Osos to see what conditions are like at the coast.)

Exit HWY 1 at Chaney Ave / Ocean Blvd going inland. Make an immediate left (Ocean Blvd), then an immediate right (Haines Ave). Go up the hill to Davies Ave and turn right. Follow that around to a left turn onto Chaney Ave and continue on towards the trail. You'll see a sign that says end county maintained road.

If you have an SUV with moderate ground clearance you can easily make it up this trail. You shouldn't need 4WD unless it has just rained, and then I wouldn't do it unless you have some mud capable tires on your vehicle (the trail turns in to slick clay for about 24 hrs after a rain fall).

Print out this little map and you'll be fine getting up the trail. You'll come to a gate along the way... just make sure you close it behind you.

West Cuesta Ridge (TV Tower Road):

LIVE Winds

NOAA Forecast

Take HWY 101 up the grade to TV Tower Road Exit (not labeled, see map for reference), follow the road up to the ridge that faces WSW for an expansive view of SLO and some great flying!

Works well in WSW winds, or NNE-ENE winds (see offshore site in pics).

Montana De Oro:

Good coastal slope when it's working... very hard to predict conditions there. Inversion layer commonly sits off the coast blocking 20-30 mph winds that are white capping just off shore 200-300 yards. Look for low temperature differential between inland and the coast and good forecasts on wunderground for this site.

Here is the forecast.

And the weather underground forecast.

See google earth file for parking and directions.

I will update this post with more directions when I have more time.

- Alex

That's Avila Beach. I've had that spot on my list and the cliffs South of 101 (Shell Beach)for 25 years. Is there a trail up there?

There was a trail when I went...kinda...it was more of a fire road that went straight up.

Long hike for no wind.

I've never been up there before. I guess you can say I'm spoiled, but I'd rather fly at places that require little to no hiking to get to. Fortunately there are plenty of spots here in SLO that are like this. Just need to get the proper conditions. Unfortunately the wind can be pretty finicky around here and very hard to predict for coastal sites.

I am going to edit the first post with flying directions and google earth files as well. This should take care of any worries about not knowing the trail to Cayucos or any other site that I've been to here.
