Scale Build Off 5 - VK Model Aircraft Nieuport 17

I bought this kit over a year ago but had to promise myself I wouldn't start it until I finished my Dave Platt Waco F-3. Well the Waco is finally balanced and ready to fly. Now I just need to wait out this Northwest weather for a chance to maiden her. (It might be months!) In the meantime, I get to start on the Nieuport. This will be my first build of a WWI plane.

Just don't beef up the tail. VK construction is good and strong, yet quite light. I've got servos and all radio gear right behind the firewall. With a PAW .40 it needed no nose weight, and all up weight was only 5 1/2 lbs. Probably easier to keep weight forward with electric. I have no right thrust or down thrust. Flies great; only problem is ground-looping on take off. I plan to install a rudder gyro for next season. With scale landing gear, it seems like the best solution. Good luck, it is a gorgeous airplane in the air and on the ground. Jim

Thanks for the advice. What did you cover yours with? I was thinking about using Solartex .

Mine is silk and dope. Not sure what Solartex might do to the balance.

Fuselage sides positioned in framing jig. You can see that I broke one of the diagonals when positioning the right side. Two steps forward and one back!

I have had pretty good luck with Eflite motors. It will probably be either a power 46 or possibly a 60 depending on how much weight I need to balance. The model calls for that range of a four stroke.

I powered mine with an AXI 2826, and 12 heavy round cells, and an old Top Flite 13x6 wood prop and had plenty of power. The 46 should be plenty, I would think. And since it is electric, you could cover with doculam and paint. Keeps it pretty light. That's what I did. Callie made some graphics for me for Billy Bishops plane.
