Sonic Modell Sky Surfer 2M Glider with FPV Platform

Just taking it out of the box.

Searched here an did not find a thread etc...

Any interest in assembly pics etc?

And is this the right place for this thread?

  • Clear nose cone for camera protection
  • 2 meter wing span
  • 6 x 17 gram servos installed
  • Durable EPP foam construction
  • 8x7 pusher prop
  • Spacious cargo bay for FPV gear
  • 5 channel control - aileron, elevator, throttle and flaps
  • Single center mounted belly wheel for easy landings.

"The Sonic Model Sky Surfer FPV glider offers great flight performance and high quality construction. Servos come preinstalled and wire leads routed. Simply glue on the tail surfaces, attach the control surface horns and add your receiver. Flight ready in under 2hrs. This model will fly well with any 11.1V LiPo from 2200mAh to 3300mAh and balances well with the larger battery and GoPro Hero 3 up front. Flight time will be determined by battery capacity but cruising at a moderate power setting easily yeilds 20+ minute flight times on a 3300mAh pack."

I had been looking at the BlitzRCWorks Super Sky Surfer (Banana Hobbies) and Airfield Giant Convertible EDF Power RC Glider (Nitro Planes) with a preference for the latter.

Unable to get the Airfield Giant Convertible shipped to Canada due to the length of the box required (something I have not run into in the past) and it was going to be a good chunk of change for shipping on the Banana Sky Surfer.

Probably more similarities between these three models than being dissimilar, but notably the sonic sky surfer has a slightly shorter wingspan etc.

Not too much interest in this glider it appears.

Having now completed assembly; one of the nicest foam glider kits I have ever assembled bar none. I have assembled quite a few over the years: Easy Star, EGlider, Clouds Fly, Bixler, V-Roc....

Happy Flying!

Are you going to equip it for FPV, or at least with a recording camera? If so, which one are you considering?

Hey SoundGuy

Yes, this will be my first video/FPV platform.

Going to start with relatively cheap little camera to shoot aerial video first, and then, not sure..

http://www.banggood.com/Wholesale-2-...0-p-48136.html

I picked up several extra nose cones to have a solid color when I'm not shooting vid. Looks pretty cool with the white nosecone black trim, well as cool as it can look being sort of an odd looking fuselage/nose to begin with.

I am joining a club, hope to get out there the first time on Monday, and several of the guys in the club are getting into FPV, so I am sure it will be an eventuality.

Not too keen on wearing goggles but some of the all-in-one screens that are coming out pretty cool.

Hello Hammer Head,

How do you like it so far? Has the dome scratched up yet?

Did the maiden last week.

Hey Guys

Flew great, very little trim required on maiden, a real floater.

Beyond excellent fit – and finish, a fun build with no mods required...yet...Another great thing is the landing wheel is a rather large diameter compared to several other similar sized gliders I have. This gives more clearance for the nose on landing and hence I may be less prone to scratched the transparent cone.

Flew at the club I recently joined, the grass is cut super super short so landing was a breeze.

I was just introduced to this one at the LHS. Quite a lot of plane for the money!

Any video, either from the ground, or from the nose?

I have not shot any vid yet, but will post when I do...waiting on delivery. If others have, be great to see it...or anything else on this glider...post away.

It is a great kit, servos are larger than I expected, and have been flawless, no chatter, centering with precision etc...

I figured I would mention that climb out was good, but not great...Looking forward to seeing if a higher C rating pack (50c vs 25c) will improve performance. ESC is well matched, nothing beyond slightly warm to the touch post flights.

I have an Orange 7 chn rx with stabilization, so that will go in once I am ready to shot some vid.

Hammer Head, I will be following your forum with interest, have been putting those stabilizer receivers in several models lately, they seem fine. Considering the Sky Surfer as a step up from the little micro-radian I am having a ball with from Horizon Hobby.

Ello Gents

I should have mini HD camera this week.

I am going to fly the Surfer one more time, then try with the Orange RX/stabilizer.

First time setting one up so wondering what to watch for?

jrd, the Surfer seems super stable, so you may even find it easier to fly than the micro rad. Lots of wing surface.

Weather looking really good to get some more stick time with the Sonic Modell Sky Surfer (SMSS) tomorrow.

Having read some mixed reviews on the Orange RX3S 3-Axis Flight Stabilizer w/DSM2 I am now thinking since it is my first time trying one out, my Bixler may be a better test bed to start, then the SMSS.

So tomorrow it will be
-SMSS
-RocHobby V-Roc EGlider
-Bixler (with stabilizer if I have time tonight).
-Durafly SE5a

life is tough,

Will post how it goes with SMSS and higher c rated pack 2200 50c vs prior 2200 25c...hoping the higher c might give a bit better performance in powered climb.

Happy Landings Chaps!

Great flying today! Seemed to have a little more pep with the higher c packs, then again it may be because they are new packs. What a stable glider, tip stall is negligible. Ascent was reasonable, certainly not vertical, but good enough climb all stock.

Eats up at 3s 2200 battery pack pretty quick, compared to something like my Bixler, so I think I may pick up a few 3s 3000/4000mahpacks. Had quite a few hawks sharing the same thermal with me today. The RC club is in a somewhat rural setting so lots of birds, with hawks making regular appearances. They know where the thermals are, I take advantage of this but always treat these beautiful animals with respect and deference; keep my distance, motor off if climbing and we are getting too close, and they always have the right of way.

Had a fellow flying a PZ Radian who also shared a thermal or two with me today. It was really hopping, almost speck-ed out a couple times, and had to push this glider down at one point in a huge thermal.

Winds were 10 to 20 km/h today with gusting, but higher winds and gusts were not a problem for this plane. And landing, get on vector, ease off on the throttle, deploy flaps, and it rolls in nice on the large landing wheel.

Hope to catch and share some video of these regularly appearing hawks soon.

Sorry the photo is crap.

Little Velcro and away we go.

Weather looks lousy, but we have a saying here,

"If ya don't like the weather wait a fve minutes, it will change."
