Terry, I have been esearching the same thing regarding radios. From what I have found, it appears that 2.4ghz is usable for both air and surface. Can someone recommend a good brand? I was looking at these:

Larry I keep a big oscillating fan in my workshop that I picked out of the garbage I have an air conditioner too, but it can't cool the whole garage very well. Right now its only 62 in nj, but It's supposed to start heating up later today.

Pete

Or, for a fraction of the price, pick up one of these http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...de%5F2%5F.html
For $24 you can have a great system. Need programmability? add the USB cable and you have access to all the mixes you could ask for. I have a futaba 7C with a frsky module as my first radio, and one of these hobby king radios for the lil' salty, it's a good radio for a great price. if you've never ordered from them before I can assure you they are a good reliable supplier. After all, no matter whether you pay $25 or $125 it'll be made in China either way, why pay more? This is great gear that will serve you well. I added 8 nimh cells and a homemade charging plug, now it's a great setup.

I love how tactic triples the price for adding dual throttles. If $109 isn't enough for you $300 ought to do it! What a pathetic ripoff!

I little more sanding "covering up errors", and it will be ready for paint.

Colors, colors, colors, so many to chose from!

Never used a quality radio? How would you know? Whats ill advised is your implication that I'm some kind of a marshmallow salesman! I've been flying with a Futaba 7CAP since 2004 and before that futaba and airtronics radios since the mid eighties. So I know the difference between the good stuff and the cheap stuff. While the spektrum radio you linked to is an excellent product, I think its a bit overkill for beginning hobbyists, especially as its for surface use only. The cost of an additional receiver for that system is $35, more than the cost of the hobby king 2.4GHz setup I linked to. There is a very long thread here devoted to the hobby king 2.4GHz products and there are hundreds of RCG members happily using these radios, including myself. I'm about to order a second for my next project.. My philosophy? Stretch my hobby dollars as far as I can. I was only offering a low price alternative.
