Loopback Cable for Oscilloscope Program?
I have used Visual Analyzer, a free program, as an oscilloscope to analyze the audio portion of a video of a motor running. Doing this allows you to get the RPM of the motor. You can do this for other people's motors if they have posted a video of it running.
That worked well with my older laptop, but doesn't seem to work with my current one. The problem is, I cant route the output of a playing audio track to the program. It seems to always be connected to the microphone input on the computer.
However, I noticed yesterday that if I use the built in speaker and turn the volume up while playing the video, the built in microphone picks up the sound and routes that to Visual Analyzer!
Not the best way to do it because the speakers are lousy, and the mic not much better.
I was wondering what would happen if I made a loopback cable to connect the headphone output to the microphone input. But I have hesitated because I'm worried about over-driving, impedance, and well, smoke coming out of the computer.
Also not sure if a microphone input is mono or stereo like the headphone output.
Any help from the more knowledgeable would be appreciated!
Also, here is the Visual Analyzer program website:

Little to no risk of smoke coming out of the computer
The microphone input is almost always mono.
The analog audio outputs can be either line level or headphone outputs.
You can buy adapters to plug into the jacks (usually 1/8 mini) and convert them to stereo red/white RCA Females
You can then just use RCA - RCA male to connect output to input and see what happens.
Or you can buy a mini to mini male to male if you know mono to stereo configuration.
All available at a Radio Shack, Fry's, Best Buy, etc
FWIW, they are fairly standard across most computers.
The documentation for your laptop will specify exactly what type of analog output you have....
