PC cooling fan - 3 wire?
.. picked up a 120mm cooling fan for a PC, to use in a new battery tube I'm building. This one comes with three wires - the usual red and black, plus a yellow. It also came with a smaller connector than the usual hard drive/CD Rom hookup connector, so I assume this connected directly to the motherboard, and the third wire is used to control fan speed?
Anyone know how it should be wired? Thx! ..a |

Hi Dave,
Kind of a dumb question here regarding the 12v dc case fans. Are they brushless? And if so, how do they work? Just curious, I don't have a worn out one on hand to dissect. Regards, Pete |

Yes, they are brushless. They have a controller built right onto the board, along with the stator..

They are indeed brushless, but only have 4 stators and 8 poles, I think...

Surplussed cooling fans from electronics can be a source of small bearings.
I've seen brand new fans sell for less than the pair of bearings they contain from some RC dealers. (of course, it might be ... entertaining and expensive matching fan size to bearing size by trial and error...) |
