Question
Noobie building my own UAV: Where do I start?

Ive always been interested in UAVs but never thought they were in my price range.

I see that UAVs are now coming down in price and you can even build one yourself.

I would like to go that route: Building my own UAV.

It wouldn't be much. I just want it to record video and audio and fly it. Nothing heavy. I guess flying it, I would use my Android.

Im a programmer but mostly desktop and web apps and database admin so Im not sure if that is going to do and Im comfy soldering (pretty much)

Where should I and can I start?

Thanks. Ill try to read thru that

Realistically, I would like just to get a drone to fly. Nothing else.

My dream? Have my drone successfully follow my car 45km hovering above my car on a highway. I can't do this though as I believe it is illegal but just to know that it can do that, would be awesome

Read a bit about the subject and just noticed that Im way in over my head to build my own.

Is there another section here talking about prebuilt ones?

Are you interested in fixed or rotary wing? For fixed wing, there is the Firetail UAV system. It's not as mature as Paparazzi, but you might find it's simpler to get going.

I think for my ideas of what I see myself flying a droid, I prefer rotary wing.

I apologize for unknowing what to say in the first post to get an idea of what exactly I am looking for.

Look at multirotors and gps multirotor control boards such as the APM or DJI NAZA.

They fly autonomous but don't stay airborne nearly as long as fixed wings do.

If you're a programmer type, take a look at APM's Software-in-the-Loop simulation

Hours of fun and learning to be had without spending a cent or building anything
