Hobbyzone Champ Mods


Didn't see any threads on the Hobbyzone Champ in the Mods department so thought I'd start one up. If there is let me know.

Of course you can...

-use a better TX (DX6i, DX7, LPD5M, DX5E or any DSM2 TX) use a little mixing/dual rates etc.

-adjust the control horn positions for more response


-maybe go brushless (if you have please post!!)

-get a bigger battery or use a smaller one too(Hperion and Turnigy and the list goes on)

The Hyperion G3 CX 0160 Mah battery is also $7.99 ea vs $12.99 for the E-Flite 150 Mah at my LHS.

Was flying my Champ this AM. Coming out of a power dive into a loop, and just BARELY hit the upright of a soccer goal. Tore the right wing off at the root. The rest is still attached to the fuse, but the right wing ripped off.

Can I CA it back on? Will it be strong enough to take loops, etc?

Anyone take the wing OFF the Champ yet? Is it glued on or taped or ??

Wasn't ready to start (re)building yet, but I'm out of choices...

Suggestions?

You can glue it back on, but its very likely to fail in the air next time. I would suggest adding a piece of carbon fiber rod under the wings to strengthen it back up if you do glue it. Make sure you use foam safe CA and foam safe accelerator on it too.

Should I put a fiber tape "spar" on the bottom of a new wing before attaching it?

Flyboy it's attached like all the other micros are, by a very thin double sided sticky tape. Just very gently and carefully work it off of the fuse. And I'd advise doing that and replacing it entirely. I can't see it ever being as strong by gluing it.

Hehe, and then stay higher up when doing loops and well away from objects like a soccer or football goal.

The new wing will be fine without any reinforcement. I was only suggesting reinforcement if you glue the wing back together.

It is attached only by double sided tape. Just be careful and easily work the wing off of the airplane.

Flyboy, I would order a new wing AND fix the old one. I would use a couple of bamboo toothpicks and CA (foam safe) them into the fuse side first. Then after the CA sets, dry fit the right piece of wing. When everything matches up, then use CA and a little bit of TP (Toilet Paper) if not a perfect match. The only caution here is that CA takes a long time to set on the inside of the foam, so once you get everything aligned let it cure at least overnight. You may also want to put some clear tape across the break. The weight of the CA and toothpicks should not significantly affect the balance. If it breaks, then you will have a new wing (previously ordered) to replace. I would bet the repair would last for weeks or more as long as you don't try flying into another object! Also, if you replace the wing, I would put a clear tape spar on the bottom of the wing. Just be careful when applying so that you don't tape a twist or bend into the wing. Good luck!

Broke both sides off mine.
I cut some of the clear plastic (that all new junk comes in from the store) into strips, used clear double backed taped it to the wing then applied clear packing tape over whole assembly. Somewhat like a splint, it has been very solid and has over 20 flights on it. No paint is needed and from a distance you can’t tell, up close not so pretty.
Then fly it like you stole it

Any one is any mixing on champ on programmable TX?

Anyone try UMP51 motor or know the piñon count? I think it's the same motor as sukhoi but I am not sure if piñon count is same as UMP51. But if it were would give the champ a little more juice coupled with GWS 543 prop and Hyperion batt.

I have a P-51 motor in my Champ. The stock motor failed relatively quickly on me. It was a drop-in replacement, fits perfectly. The power lead is a bit longer on the P-51 motor.

I don't have any way to accurately measure the exact thrust, but I'd say that it's in the 1:1 area.

I am using the stock prop and 160 mah Turnigy and Poweredge batteries.
