Maidened at last.

the weather was rubbish, drizzly, misty and very damp.

But the Kappa 35 was not a disappointment, even in these conditions it floated around with a very low sink rate. it seems to have a good speed range and the flaps very effective with a good climb rate under power, getting to 150 meters in less than 20 seconds.

need to sort out some minor trim settings in the different flight modes but could not be happier.

my build

Hello,

I didn't use the ply for servomount in de fuse. In the pictures my build with the abillity to add 260 gr ballast.

Pretty standard. Motor is a Mega 16/25/4CE, hyper spinner with Ae 10*7 and a thin esc. Battery is SLS 1000 with 19 mm. So it is possible to place the battery and esc behind the motor where the fuse is 38mm thick. Ad canopy it is smaller!
The servoplate is demountable with 4 screws in case you have to service motor or esc (antenna's in silicone fixed with hotglue)

Flying weight 1330 gr, carbon D-box.
Not much flown yet. But already placed the cg further back now on 98 mm.

Structure is strong enough to carry more weight. Surprised by its abillity to make distance.
Not happy with the weight of the (small) stab with 51 gr and the small rudder.

Hope it gives you some ideas.

Johnny

The aileron and flap linkage pins have come loose on some customers models, see:

Please see http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2606123

I recommend everyone checks the linkages on their models.

Neil.

I checked mine during the build, and used a very small dab of cyno on one end of the pins, only needed to do the ailerons as the flap pins were pretty tight.

Not had chance to fly the Kappa for a few weeks but finally got a few flights in, moved the C of G back, ( haven't messured it yet) and comparing it to the Multiplex Herron , well there's no contest the Kappa is a great soaring machine. The control authority is not as sharp as the Heron so it more of a handful in terbulance but it works the weak Febuary thermals like a star.

I am glad you are happy with the model Richard.

Do you mean a 16x8 prop?

Neil.

Very pleased with my new Kappa35 full cabon F5J glider.
Setup are:
6 x MKS-HV6100
Leomotion L3013-6000
38 mm Hyperspinner
GM 14x7 folding prop
Castle Phoenix Edge Lite 100
3S 1300 mh LIPO

Only problem is to get CG right, the Lipo have to stay in front, behind the motor. Thats means that I canīt get the Lipo out, the ESC are to big.
Other option is to place the ESC behind the motor, then itīs easy to get the Lipo in and out, but then the CG are to aft.

Try a smaller prop, battery and ESC. I routinely use 850mAh 3s and 70A Jeti SB ESC on a Mega 16/15/2 and 5.2:1 Kontronics Gearbox motor. Gives 2 -3 launches without problems. I use a 13x8" prop on that. I see the Hyperflight page for that motor says 13x8 will provide 69A ~690W. That's more than enough (hint - understatement) power for a light F5J plane.

I know what you saying, only climbing on 50% power, 100% to wild, climb as a rocket then

That's further proof that you have an over sized power system on a model that ishould intended to be a very light weight floater.

This is a pretty hardcore setup This probably hauls. I would put something much lighter in there myself, would be a better match to the airframe.

my Kappa 35 weighs in at a little under 1400g

using the Powerline 1025 motor with a 16x8 prop and 1300mha battery it can climb to 200 metres in 18 to 20 seconds without any problem.

And mine was under 1200g (42oz) using a NEU 707 motor and lightweight components.
Climb rate was about the same -- 10 meters/sec.
