Not too far down the road, in Chesapeake VA. I am sure I will be visiting FARCC at times, just not on my short list of flying sites.

Not sure if everyone is aware of this but it would seem there is currently no head of Public and Government Relations at the AMA. We have asked for a status of the situation... Not surprisingly we have not heard anything back yet.

Club meeting this Tuesday (1/12) at the Government Center in Reston - 7:30pm. We'll be having the Board of Directors election and an update regarding the whole field closure matter will be discussed. We are amassing as much information regarding the situation as possible and will share it at the meeting.

don't forget the NVRC meeting on the 21st.

The FAA reps are supposed to be there to brief and answer questions.

Folks from the AMA Dist IV Gov't relations board are going to try and make it there as well.

Thanks Carl, I think the only question everyone wants to hear is when are the fields going to open back up. I've got to go to Oklahoma for a few weeks so I wont be in town. I might bring a few planes with me..

anyone know what fields the AMA and FAA are going to visit>?

This is an excerpt from today's AMA email -

Additionally, we wanted to update you on the latest developments as we continue to work with the FAA to find a path forward on the registration process. Today, AMA leadership is in Washington, D.C., meeting with FAA officials to discuss this and other issues impacting the modeling community. During the visit, AMA will be accompanying Marke "Hoot" Gibson, the FAA's Senior Advisor on UAS Integration, in a visit to one of the local flying sites in the DC area. This visit will grant the FAA an opportunity to witness AMA's safety protocol, observe club camaraderie and mentoring, and speak with AMA members firsthand about their concerns.

from the AMA Facebook page
the pics did not work

AMA Leadership met with the FAA on Friday, January 15 to discuss model aircraft registration and to resolve member concerns such as LMA. During those discussions the FAA stated the registration of Large Model Aircraft was overlooked and indicated there was no intent to subject AMA members who fly large model aircraft over 55 pounds in compliance with AMA guidelines to a stricter registration process. Also, it was not intended for model aircraft flown within AMA programming to register under the Part 47 process and obtain an N-number. The FAA UAS Integration Office is currently looking into this issue and said they'll respond back to us when they have further information. We are working to document this in writing and should be issuing a statement to our membership soon.

Thanks to Patuxent Aeromodelers for hosting the newly appointed FAA Senior Advisor on UAS Integration, Marke Gibson. This was a great opportunity to showcase our safe hobby directly to the FAA. Marke even had stick time with a buddy box.

We told you back in December that the Federal Aviation Administration established a new rule for owners of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) — more commonly known as drones — requiring them to register their aircraft with the government.

Less noticed — in most parts of the country, anyway — was another new FAA rule declaring Washington, D.C., a “no drone zone.” Specifically, UAS devices are now prohibited from flying within a 30-mile radius of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

This new special flight rules area (SFRA) isn’t exactly new; rather, it resulted from a new interpretation of existing rules that now apply to anything that flies — including drones and model aircraft. “Unmanned aircraft, including model aircraft, are ‘aircraft’ and are subject to FAA rules,” an FAA spokesperson told Yahoo Tech in an email. “No aircraft is allowed to fly inside the SFRA unless it complies with the published airspace security requirements.”

Among those requirements: An aircraft must be in touch with air traffic control by two-way radio and must have a transponder that can broadcast a unique code. Few drones can comply.

The requirement for a transponder is the real deal killer here. Transponders designed for small airplanes are readily available and aren’t overly expensive, either. But they generally weigh more than a pound, which makes them heavier than most drones. They also require an independent source of electricity, which most drones lack.

The upshot is that no one can legally fly a drone (or model aircraft) in the Washington, D.C., area.
