I just have Velcro on the wing tube and battery deck + a strap. Lay the battery with one end tilted up and laying on the wing tube back enough to suit your taste. My Eflite 60A ESC is attached along one side as close to the wing tube as possible. Flys great

Thanks, Bluhammer! I'm going to give this a try.

I've got the same setup in mine, but it seems like I'm going to have to make a custom battery rack below the elevator and rudder servos.
15 size motor just won't balance without lead at the end of the tailcone. Only reason to use a 15 (35x48) is that's what ya got..

What do I do with a spare 480? Modify it! Just wasted 3 days latching the canopy.

Can't agree with that. Flown mine with a P-10 and now a Rim .15. No tail weight and flys awesome. It will still pattern nicely but really wakes up when you want it to. I guess I'm a unlimited vertical guy.

It depends on how are you assembled the kit to begin with. If you put a lot of glue or other added things, you may see something different with balance.

That's what I am going for—unlimited vertical! But I also like the ability to fly pattern.

I have a tacon bigfoot 15. I just checked and it weighs 170g, the rimfire. 15 only weighs 102g (approx). So this may be the reason I'm not able to balance even with the battery moved back on top of the wing tube.

How does your front landing gear hold up with the added weight of the Rim .15?

Balancing Leader 480 with .15 Size Motor

I recently finished modifying my Leader 480 with .15 size motor, 60 ESC, and 4s. In order to get the plane to balance correctly I had to make some modifications to the location of the elevator and rudder/steering servo location. I moved both servos back 3 inches so I could mount the battery over the wing tube. I also added a horizontal support just below the area where the servos were originally mounted. I did this for additional structural support, but I also needed a way to support the battery (using lots of hook&loop to hold the battery in place, plus the battery strap). While moving the servos back I upgraded the steering pushrod to a larger diameter pushrod—which seems to make the steering more responsive. It seems to balance nicely, so I plan to give it a test run next weekend.

Easy to Balance w/ Rimfire .15 and 4S lipo

Use a efilite 30C 2200 MAh 4S lipo and the eflite 40Amp pro speed control w/ APC 10x7E prop and the Leader 480 will balance perfectly without lead.

The 4S 2200 battery goes all the way back in the tray, right in front of the wing tube (not on top of it) and the speed control goes all the way at the front of the battery tray. No lead needed anywhere.

Flight time is 4 minutes if you run flat out and it's scary fast. Drop in a 2200 MAh 3S in the middle of the battery tray just behind the speed control and presto! It's balanced perfectly with no lead and no need to change props.

That's right! The APC 10x7E prop works great on 3S or 4S. As a 3S plane it's almost capable of sustained vertical - close enough if you stay under 400 feet for the FAA. On 4S it is just thrilling no matter what direction you point it.

Leader "480" means 4 cell lipo makes it go 80 MPH

Two moments

Why is "moment" used to describe the relative position of weights on a seesaw?
Anywho
I have 2 480's flying, same motor, ESC, battery. On the second I mounted the motor 1/4" more forward of the firewall. ESCs are under battery tray, right behind firewall (1" motor leads).

That 1/4" added to motor moved battery 1" backwards!

on props

Using same Tacom10 motor, proton 60 ESC, and freshly charged nano-tech 2,200mah 4s c40-90 battery, I get these peak measurements.

apc12x6e 53amp
apc10x7e 50amp
ma10x9 45amp
ma10x7e 43amp

I'm disappointed with the masterairscrew (ma10x9). I'd expected it would consume more current and watts than the apc10x7e, which is still the sweet prop for .10 motors.
