Foamy Night Flyer ---- X2

Foamy Night Flyer Build Times Two!

The night flying forum has been dead here in what many consider the height of building season. Spring is still several weeks out and it's time to build up the fleet in anticipation of spring. To liven things up a bit this will be a double build. Same airframe, maybe a little different lightings on each.

This will be a 38 inch foamy powered by a Super Tiger .10 and a 3S 1000mah LiPo. The lights will be wired to the balance tap of the battery for easy connection.

First, we cut some depron.

To make a nice rigid foamy I split the wing and elevator down the middle and glue in a piece of 6mm carbon fiber strip.

Let's get something straight...

And by that I mean our foamy. A plane that is straight and square will fly much better.

This is my foamy assembly table. A slot is cut in the table with a set of alignment holes for the wings and the horizontal stab. It takes the guess work out of making the wing square and centered.

Starting with 2 fuselage pieces, split the tabs on the horizontal half and slide it onto the vertical half to form the fuselage. The table slot, a metal straight edge and some triangles keep it straight and square during assembly.

The horizontal stab and elevator assembly is now glued to the fuse using the alignment holes in the table.

At this point the LED strip for the "fluorescent tube" is glued down. It will later be covered with a side brace that will glow like a fluorescent light.

Now the plane is turned over and the filler plate is installed behind the wing. Use a straight edge and square to assure the bottom is true. Glue the wing bottom in place, then the landing gear support gussets.

A word on LED strip and connections.

I get my LED strip from two sources Hobby Partz and Hobby King.

The strip from HobbyPartz.com is 6mm wide and has small solder pads. It is lighter, and fits perfectly on the edge of 6mm depron. The down side is...it's harder to solder.

The strip from HobbyKing.com is 9mm wide and has large solder pads. It is a tad heavier, will not work on the edge of 6mm Depron, but is easy to solder.

They have the same number of LEDs per meter and draw the same current, 400ma per meter at 12V.

I strip a old computer parallel cable to get the interconnect wire.

I cut my blue LED strip to the lengths for the bottom pattern and tin the pads, then apply the strip to the plane. Trying a new pattern for the bottom. "V"s look good on night flyers and provide great orientation.
