Soljet 70mm EDF Flying Wing

The Soljet is a flying wing with a single 70mm EDF unit. I'm going to build with R1.0 foam from lowes and carbon tubing.

My plan is to make this a 5-6 minute night flyer with the advanced edf lighting kit and neon tubes. I have a 70mm unit left over from a motor replacement on my FMS scorpion and I want to try my hand at a scratch build.

Wish me luck!

I essentially want it to look like a Ho 229 (belly lander) with one motor and nowhere for the pilot:

Very much like this XPD-8 - but much larger. My plan is to build the wings out of foam and feed in 15cm square carbon fiber tubing that's detachable from the fuselage. This model had CG issues because all the components were stored in a somewhat large cockpit area on top of the edf. The soljet will have two 2s batteries on either side of the edf. Only the ESC, Gyro, Receiver, light control, and light battery will sit on top of the EDF if I can't get them to balance on either side of the edf. Something else weird about the XPD-8 is that the aileron servos are on the bottom and there doesn't seem to be any kind of skid pad. I'm planning to put my servos on top of the wing (just like a CTH wing) and build skid pads out of 3 liter coke bottle plastic.

Another video that looks similar to my design is the FF-Wasp. The difference is that I won't have a rudder because I'll be using thrust vectoring for yaw. The balance of this jet is achieved with two 4s batteries ahead of the edf unit which is all the way in the back. The intake for the edf comes from the top and bottom of the wing which has been disrupted by the wing itself. I don't like disrupting the airflow into the edf - mine will be completely open. I do like the vertical stripes - I might want that in blue and white. The thrust tube on the back can't help with the CG either...

Pictures from this weekend

I attempted to create the framing for the thrust tube this weekend but didn't get far. I need to wait for the thrust tube to come in to see how I could mount it before making the fuselage, but these pictures show my first attempt. I will need 2 or 3 of these frames to connect to the pieces they will slide into for the sides of the fuse. I'm planning to put the batteries here and mount the wings to them.

My next attempt will be different because I'm going to make all 3 of the frames on my band saw at once so they'll be identical. I'm also going to have a better idea about the real wingspan of this plane. I want to use a 23 degree sweep off of a 20cm center section. Depending on how much the thrust vector weighs I'm going to have to make the wings a little shorter than in my original diagrams.

Thank you skydve for getting the fan unit and ESC back to me!

This week, my orders for batteries, servos, carbon rods etc. is coming in. I'll post more pictures then!

This thing is too heavy for VTOL.

The motor I have can only do 1600g of thrust. If I assume that the wood, foam, and carbon tubes are about 500g then this won't work.

Should still fly though. I kind of wanted it to be slower for more aerobatic moves with the lights on at night.

Busy night

Last night I cut more fuselage parts and added the sides. I realize that the batteries I bought are about 3x too big for this plane so I'll have to use them for something else or get rid of them in the classifieds. The entire plane should be less than 1500g and those batteries are more than 500g!

All I need to do now is figure out how long the wings should be. I'm set on a 23 degree angle from the front of the fuselage. I need the thrust vector on the end of the thrust tube to be shorter than the wings so that when they fold out for VTOL mode, they'll hit the ground instead of the vector.
