Question
Vacuum Table and CNCing Foam

I would like to ask for some suggestions with creating a vacuum table.
I want to cut foam wings to be inserted into molds that I have created.

I've seen some designs for vacuum tables and I have now created on similar to one or two that I have seen.

I want to create negative mdf cuttouts with holes for the vacuum to hold down the cores while I cut them on the cnc.

If anyone knows where I can look or has some idea's please post them.

Thanks Tom
I'm wanting to cut the Zone foils, I'm worried about alignment.

I am almost complete with the table.

You can PM me If you prefer.

This is fine. Most of what I know came from here at one point or another.

I think I will start another thread later tonight... how much detail do you want to see?

CAD work?

Toolpathing?

Fixture creation?

Machining tips?

Mold creation? (same as for hollow molded)

I can get pretty granular if you're not in a hurry... but I dont want to drone on about stuff if there isn't interest.

I've gotten a handle on the CAD and toolpathing.
I would say that mold creation, machining tips and fixture creation.

With Mold creation I use MDF to create the plug, I prep it with a primer and not epoxy, maybe not the best method.
A automotive 2part paint called 2k, I think it is similar to 2pack.
beautiful and smooth but spaying it properly takes practice, and I've gotten reasonably good at it.
I've concidered tooling board which cost around $200 for 1500mm x 500mm but is is worth the cost.
Epoxy Paste over foam, quited good i've heard and I've heard it cheeper but I have not price it yet.
The leading edge has been a debate between me and another experience molder.
Create a trough or first create a negative then positive and then the mold.(way to many steps for my liking)
I would prefer straight to mold but then I need to find Corian at the right sizes locally for free if I can.

The other area is creating a fixture similar to your vacuum table with the vertical and horizontal vacuuming negative, only I want to do this with the main wing core.
This way I can machine the top than then turn it around and suck it down and cut the bottom, maintaining the shape of the foam core
I like solid cores for many reasons and would prefer this to hollow wings.

Oh and I will make time to read every bit of information you write.

Tom thanks

Have you seen the Podz system? Very flexible since the "clamps" can be relocated with a single screw. http://www.veneersupplies.com/produc...ping-Jigs.html With a few pieces of HDPE machined out for a O ring, you could probably build these yourself.

Tom,

I am also interested in more on this subject.

My CNC router is now in service, I made a vacuum hold down table and I am learning Rhino 5 with the MadCam plugin. My current focus is on making tails with the Z4D foil.

Insight into female vacuum hold down fixtures, locating each side of the foam core during machining, toolpathing and troubleshooting beginner problems would be appreciated. Your past level of detail has been great in my opinion. And your videos have been very helpful.

Thanks,

Sorry for the delays in getting this stuff up. My daughter and I caught a bug and have had a rough couple of days. I will start taking pictures as I machine some tail parts tonight and get to posting.

I'll probably take a week or two to post all of this stuff. Lots of detail to remember.
