I think it's pretty apparent what breaks which prop. The scimitar-bladed wood props are only vulnerable right at the tips, where any contact is on a definite grain boundary. Been playing with various Turnigy props, the straight-tip sport props aren't fragile at all.

The APC's tend to break near the hub, I suspect into corn the wood would be at least as good as APC, but rubbing against the runway definitely put the advantage to the APC.

most important factor to me: "do I have a prop to go fly", "how good it is on the thrust stand and in the air". So, quality woodies whenever possible, APC's 'cause that's all the LHS have and I want to fly today and did something stupid yesterday.

Really, my only complaint about APC's is *WHY* do they have to be so sharp? If nothing else, the concensus is that the better wood props are at least as good overall in performance...and you can't cut up a steak with those. Obviously, sharp edges are not necessary.

You are absolutely correct, they don't need to be that sharp. On "slimers" you definitely need to need to dull the rear edge, or you will slice your fingers everytime you try to start your engine, unless you sand the trailing edge.. While I don't sand my "E" props, it does not hurt to do so.

I have always used apc-e props. Bought some xoars and tried them out. They are definately nice. I still have some 12x7's on my PA planes. Broke my larger xoars on my 3DHS 55" plus planes and switched back to the apc's because they are available locally and cheap.

I think I like the crazy buzz they produce when stressed.

Here's my take. the APC-E props work great in all diameters up to 700 or so watts. In the 14-17" range, I get a lot of vibration and cavitation (not technically the correct term, but I don't have a better one) above 700 watts. The jump to 18" and larger diameters seem to handle the higher watts fine due to increased hub mass and thicker blades. I like the 18+" APC-E props just fine. For me, there is a small window in the 14-17" range and higher than 700 or so watts that just doesn't work for my flying style.

I have a bunch of APC props also but I like Xoar props - smooth and quiet (but I agree less bite). The Turnigy wood props have turned out amazingly well, just wish more sizes were available. As for durability, I admit that I managed to split the tip of a $$$ 25" Xoar prop once before the plane ever left the ground...

+1 on nice quiet wood props. Never had an issue with Vox wood props either. They come balanced and just pop it on the plane. The only time I have busted one is doing stupid stuff like flying in the dark the other day. Smacked the asphault on landing. It would have destroyed an APC prop as well.
