Gee Bee Senior Sportster

It's been a while since my last post - and "starting fresh" I wanted to show you a stellar example of an exact 1/6 scale 30's racer designed by Herve Liardon and expertly cut by my very good friends at J1MK.

This 1/6 scale Gee Bee is an incredibly scale aircraft, all the way to the airfoil and rigging. As this thread progresses, I will cover it, add the radio gear and see how she flies - But with 8 feet of snow on the New England ground, may take a little while. I will have other racers designed and available as well, a Mystery Ship design (all 5 versions), Super Solution, Model Z, Turner Special and a couple other surprises, all in 1/6 scale.

This is my re-birth from builder to designer and cooperative partner with some of the finest artists and kit cutters on the planet. Again, Much more to follow, but here is a little sneak peak.

Wooden art. Bravo !

30-racers, I am a great fan of them.
I'd like them just a tad biger for the real racers. May be 1:5 or 1:4.5
Is the Super Sportster available?

Aldo

Haffke's 1:5.3 Gee Bee D from Coverite kit.

G B's are Seductive aircraft...always.
IMO although Lovely as that stick model build is. It represents 'Many' hours of work.. so far.
I'd prefer to actually build Haffke's model as it has IMO 1/4 ! the parts to fit and glue.
But then I'm unnaturally lazy
GEE BEE Model Y Senior Sportster. Plan number 299 from the AMA Plans service. Drawn by Henry Haffke in 1980.

It is a "builders" kit - but what a beauty - the design is on the complex side, and for that scale "contest" you could not do better - for a Sunday Flyer - May be a little too much - But I always seem to go over the top on things.. -

This is the second senior sportster built (the first one came with the Townend ringed engine) built as NR718Y, it later had a larger Wright Whirlwind installed by Bob Hall and Art Knapp. This (in it's current form" is how it rolled out of the "factory") This one was built for the Cord Automobile Company with the "New" NACA Cowling.

That's not the same plane!!!

Haffke's model is the first MODEL Y and the model shown here is the second MODEL Y built by the Granville. (see the cowl and the tailwheel)

Here's a pic my Maxford Gee Bee Y bash, note windshield and stab bracing. This version had a cover over front cockpit with retractable windshield for racing. Raced by Maud Tait and others, Maud retired from racing and eventually retired from schoolteacher at an old age.
