Motor Change

I have a Hyperion Extra 330 with their ZS3007-24b motor in it and a 3S 2200 pack.

Flights are 5:00 minutes and not very 3D capable. Plane weighs 36oz with the current motor and 3S 2200 ready to fly.

Tried 9x6, 10x5, and 11x5.5 props and the later seems to be the motors limit.

Looking at replacing it with either an Emax GT2812/10 or BL2812/12 from Heads Up.

Emax GT2812/10
Emax BL2810/12

The BL2810/12 seems a bit more appealing based on the weight being closer to the Hyperion I have in it, but I don't know if the performance posted is realistic.

If you had a similar plane and wanted a motor upgrade, which one of those would you select?

If you're only getting 5 minutes and poor performance out of a 36oz model with a 3S 2200, I'd be looking first at the batteries then the motor. I still get 5 minutes of really strong performance on a 46" 3DHS Vyper ~42oz with old tired 3S 2200 packs. (That's with a Zs3014-14 with 13x6.5 pulling 40A max). At under 30A a reasonable pack should hold up to about 10-10.5V and you should be getting well over 6 minutes unless you're at full throttle the whole time.

To me, the motor weight and Kv are about right for the model and flying style. I'm not sure that just changing brand to a motor the same size and weight and Kv (3007 > 2810/12) will achieve any material difference but I guess $25 would not be an overly expensive experiment to find out

The 2812 is at least a bit bigger and heavier and should be able to run a bit cooler at the same power input, but with the lower Kv you'd need a 12" prop to see any thrust improvement.

Is the 3007 getting overly hot? Looking at it in Ecalc and based on how my 3014 performs, I'd try it with a 12" prop, but only after seeing what sort of voltage the batteries are holding under load with the present setup.

It is getting pretty warm.

I don't think a 12" prop would work based on experience with the 11". I have tried two ESC and all timing settings but a sudden throttle up will cause timing loss with the 11". A 10" prop doesn't have that issue.

My batteries are three different brands, some new 40C ones. I originally thought about those but now I wonder if I am just driving the motor too hard. I am at 3/4 throttle most of the time with throttle down in places that allow but things like harrier and 3D aren't possibly.

Also wonder if I have a bum motor.

With the 11" prop I am pulling 32amps static and will do another test for voltage.

32A seems about in the ballpark for an 11x5.5, but of course that's only input. Have you put a tacho on it to see what prop rpm you're getting? 9500+ for a 10x5 and 8500+ for the 11x5.5 would be an indication the motor is OK

Thanks for the input, I have a tach and will be sure to include that in the test.
