Clipped Wing FT Spitfire
I have been playing around with my 800mm Mustang trying to squeeze some more speed out of her. I'm able to hit over 100mph with the standard design but with the changes I made to the wing it definitely pushes a little faster. I have not gotten an accurate speed measurement yet, but it looks to be around 115mph. The normal FT Spitfire is one of my favorite planes but after tasting the sweet 100+ speeds it's hard to go back to an 80mph bird without wanting more. Maybe I'm just a speed junkie? With that being said, I've decided to try and spruce up the design a bit after my success with the 800mm Mustang.
Here is an idea of what I'll be going for.
To the best of my ability I'm going to clip the wings, remove the under camber wing tips and close up the trailing edge on the FT Spitfire. I am going to do this 'on the fly' with DTFB and my knife. I will take pictures along the way of my pieces so if this turns out okay, I will turn them into digital plans.
Motor NTM 35-48 1100kv
Prop 10x10 APC
ESC 70a Dynam
Servo EMAX ES08MA 12g Metal Gear
Battery 45C 2000mah 4S
TX/RX FrSky Taranis/X8R + FLVS and GPS
Top Speed 90s
With this setup on the normal FT Spitfire and Mustang I pull 900w and around 70a out of the motor. The Spitfire tops out at 80mph and my Mustang hits 85mph. I am hoping to reach closer to 100 after the design changes.
After a bit of planning and measuring here is the basic idea of what each wing half will look like. The wing tip has been scored in various ways and I will be beveling pretty much every edge.
The two halves glued together with my aluminum spar. Servos are inside the wing for a really sleek look and feel.
Wing tips came out really nice.
Trailing edge is very clean and is a huge improvement over the standard design.
The wing took me a few hours to design and build but I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out so far.
Build completed, everything turned out great!
The video gets a little blurry, sorry about that, but the flight went really well. I was surprised that it felt almost exactly the same as the stock FT Spitfire. It really is still a great performing plane even with the stubby wings.
I am super bummed that I crashed her so early in her life. This was the 4th battery through her, so less than 30 min flight time. To get the proper CG with my 4S 2000mah I had to stick it really far back in the powerpod. This stretched the ESC/battery connector a bit and I guess over the flight it just came loose and let go. I use deans connectors but have bought 5.5mm bullets to replace them with, I just need to get around to doing it. I initially thought my ESC fried but after inspecting the crash I was able to plug the battery back in and everything came to life.
I was able to glue and tape her up right there at the field and put another 7 batteries through her with no issues. No impact to flight, but I plan to rebuild soon. I just love that clean look
-Still handles the same as normal FT Spitfire
-Slow speed 'floatiness' still there
-Very fast and ultra quiet
-This motor is killer sounding. I love it.
-Wing is more difficult to build
-Depending on your tastes, it doesn't look as good compared to the stock FT Spitfire
All in all
Great modification to a great plane. My goal was to get more speed out of the same power set up and I don't have hard proof but it definitely feels faster. My GPS was not cooperating so I'll have to try again to get a true number, but she felt mid 90s. In my crash video I am flying with a beefed up FMS Strega and she is passing me up pretty good. My 800mm FT Spitfire can fly side by side with that Strega and it got 119mph on radar in that video.
The new look is growing on me, but I'm not a huge fan. I think I might have clipped her a little too much compared to the scale version, but I am pleased with how she turned out.
Let me know what you guys think! And please let me know if anyone wants the wing plans.
