Noob question

I'm trying to get my facts together to build a quad.

The point I'm trying to figure out right now is this: what determines how far the drone can get from my radio?

I see all these videos where it looks like the quad--considering both altitude and horizontal travel has to be a half mile or more from the operator, but I also read that a lot of commercial quads are limited to a couple of hundred feet.

Is it the tansmitter? If not, what?

Thanks for any help.

It's a combination of transmitter and receiver and good quality equipment has a range of about 1000 meters, well beyond your visible range. Beyond that, it's special antennas and signal repeaters.

A lot of factors. But mostly it's about your antennas. How they're oriented, how far they're kept away from noise, how well they're turned to each other.

This is of course, assuming that you're already using a good radio. I'm using a 9XR with a Frsky module and i can get out to 1.5km on stock antennas.
