Point Pillar Point Harbor (USCA Scenic Harbor)

North of the small town of Half Moon Bay lies the protected harbor of Pillar Point.

Surrounded by an inner and outer breakwater, the waters of the harbor can literally be ‘smooth-as-glass’ while big waves pound on the outer breakwater.

This place is literally 15 minutes from my home, on a good traffic day that is, and it’s a great place to pick-up some fresh fish or Dungeness Crab (crab season typically runs from November thru June) from the local fishing fleet.

More news about the crab fishery can be found here

Pedro Point (USCA Scenic Ocean)

About 1/3 of the way between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay is a beach known by locals for good surfing. This beach used to be named after the nearby town (Linda Mar) but was renamed to Pacific State Beach.

But for some of us whom remember fishing for Stripers way back when, Pedro Point was a definite stop when the surf and tides were right.

Edit: This short video clip was used to qualify a specific flight path to be used for this sortie.

Cliff House and Lands End (USCA Scenic Landmark)

I just have to quote Mark Twain here..."The coldest day I ever spent was a summers day in San Francisco"...he should have been here this morning.

Situated at the north-west most corner of the San Francisco Peninsula is a renowned landmark called the Cliff House.

This place has been burned down, re-built, sold and renovated more times than quite possibly any other structure in San Francisco itself. But through the decades it has still managed to survive and the great dining hall has been reopened to the public as of late last year.

There are two other landmarks which surround this corner of The City...

Playland at the beach (USCA Scenic Beach)

Playland brings back fond memories of childhood…ahhh the Fun House and a freshly made “It’s-It”...mmmm

Now it’s just another block of condos at the beach…

Sutro Baths (USCA Scenic Ocean)

The Sutro Baths (History , Pictures) was quite the structure and a bit of engineering went into the way the baths were actually kept filled with salt water. A collection pond was fed by high tides and a culvert allowed the collected seawater to flow into the bath house.

You can see the culvert below the wooden bridge walkway – left of center in the second picture. It’s amazing to see so much of this are changed by the forces of nature, the culvert used to extend around the point below the ‘L’ shaped brick staircase. This staircase used to lead to a lower observation deck, which is now laying in pieces in the sea.

Wild Moose,
What a great presentation! Thanks for the links also. I thought the information on the Sutro baths was really interesting. You've got some really great shots there! I really enjoyed it.

One way to get around the 100k limit is to upload it to your gallery, right-click on the fullsize image to copy the image location, then post it here surrounded by [img] tags.

What camera? They do look nice.

Daddy-0, Thank you very much. It was just one of those days when everything was going right. I had no more than 10 to 15 minutes to spend at each location as the winds from the previous day had hit 30 knots along the coast...and it was threatening to do the same on this day.

I had been taking less than adequate images lately so having this round come up as good as they did feels great. Who hasn't been here before?

Hi Karl, I remember when the IMG tags used to work (about a year ago) so this is great news that they are working again. Thanks for the heads up.

The camera is a Gateway DC-T50, I don't know if you saw the post I made last year about it but aside from the weight factor it has been taking some nice shots (lately). Perhaps it has something to do with being slammed into the ground a few times...

Roger,

Really nice work. I also like the idea for the thread.

HMB is much prettier than I ever imagined! Thanks,

Roger

Earl, keep in mind that I was flying at approximately 50' ASL, I've never seen a plane come in that low on final to HMB before due to the treeline obstruction and buildings in the area. Needless to say I was keeping an eye out for any traffic and would have immediately landed should there of been any aircraft on approach.

Artur, thank you very much. Yes I used the upper parking lot for take-off and landing. It was a bit rough there but I had to use the lot as the observation platform was out of the question due to wind direction.
