Scale Build-Off 4: Short S.23 C-Class Empire flyingboat build from shortkit

Well here's my entry for the contest. The Short Empire flyingboat , i wil build it using my plan and the lasercut shortkit made by GLM from Morganmill/RC.

In 2012 i made the design for this aircraft , it is designed in the spirit of Ivan Pettigrew. The prototype first flew in April 2013. As you can imagine the prototype was build quite fast so i could see if the design was airworthy and if any revesions were neccecary.

The build has started some time ago but i have not done any work on it for some time. This scale build off got my going again so i thought to enter it in the competition. The fuselage is already build so the time frame of the build-off is realistic for me.

Cheers,

Bart

The prototype AUW was 2750gram (97ounce) and had a wing loading off 41,41gram/dm2 or 15.55 oz/sq ft.
For this build i will try to build it even lighter. By moving the servo's as far up in the nose as possible and using lighter parts/construction in the back i hope i can get away with a single 3s 3300mAh batterypack to get the CG right.
The prototype flies with a 3S 5800mAh lipo and flight of an half hour are no exception so a smaller battery capacity should be no problem.

Cheers,

Bart

When both fuselage were build i joined them using 5x5mm balsa cross beams. This step takes time to get a straight fuselage.

Tail

The tail surfaces are removable for transport. The controls are all inside the fuselage.
The suraces slide in cf tubes and are held in place by 3x3mm magnets. The rudder and elevator have a slot in them wich falls over the control rod on the fuselage.

Cheers,

Bart
