Yup, put the nut on first. After you cut the shaft, then remove the nut and it will help straighten the threads.

Put an object on the drill press bed that is parallel to the shaft/drill chuck. This will be your test guage. Turn the chuck by hand and compare the angle of the shaft to the object. You can easily see if it's straight or not and which way it is crooked. Tap lightly on the crooked side and compare it with the test guage. Continue to do this till the shaft is parallel with the test guage. Finally, turn the drill press on and see if any wiggle remains. If it's too much, go back to step 1. |
