Help!
Super Noob Questions (Saaave me!)
Hey Guys,
Loving this community so far (been lurking and reading for a few weeks), you guys seem to be very mature and patient, especially with us newbies. Background on this is that I am a 'Super Noob', as in I have next to zero experience with electronics, have never really attempted anything in the the R/C hobby realm and have limited robotics experience as well. But here I am, building a quadcopter heh. Please bear with me! This is not hyperbole unfortunately, I am starting at the most basic level imaginable and will be learning on the fly about voltage and wiring and motors and programming. I am approaching it like a martian that just landed on earth and has never seen any of this before (yeah, that bad). I used this excellent thread https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show....php?t=1174262 as a basis for my build, purchased the same parts and the only thing I am waiting for is the Quadpowered board to arrive. (On a side note, I understand why it is the case, but the lack of documentation accompanying many of these parts is frustrating). Now, I have constructed the frame and have started on mounting of motors etc in preparation for wiring the 'brain' up. My first few in what will be many many questions is: 1) Can someone help me out with how I am supposed to connect the motor and its connectors to the controller connectors? I get in THEORY and I can find the correct setup probably, but how do I get the end of the wire into the brass male/female ends? I have enclosed a picture (sorry for the poor quality) with my alphabetical references to sort them a bit. There is a hole in the side of the brass connectors, is that where the wire goes somehow? I have tried to emulate pictures on this board that showed it close up, but it seemed very loose when I attached the rubber pieces over them...I think I missed a step. 2) I purchased a 15c Lithium battery pack and it says to charge on a concrete floor 3 meters from anything flammable. I live in a tiny 2nd story apartment building, so would charging in a closed metal box or something be ok? I don't have an option to charge outside etc either....do I really need to go through that many precautions to charge it? 3) After everything arrives and is wired up, would it hurt the motors to run without the props during my tests at first? 4) Does the size of the middle portion effect the performance of the quad at all? Some people use CD holders or just flat plastic pieces, but are there any benefits to certain shapes or sizes to hold your Rx/Gyros/Sensors etc? In other words, if I used a hollowed out square cable modem case would it mess with the airflow too much maybe? That's all for now I think, those are my 'phase 1' issues thus far...any and all feedback is greatly appreciated and I will continue to read other threads as well as needed. Please excuse my lack of correct jargon/terms at this point too, I will get better with time haha :P Thanks again guys! |

Do I put the wire nub into the hole in the side of the connector and solder that, or is there another way? Do you have any recommendations for heating the heat shrink tubing or would just a hair dryer suffice? Thanks again |

Practice soldering with some wires and some strips of thin copper first.
Male bullet connector on the red wire going to the ESC, female on the black. Three female bullets on the three wires going from the ESC to the motor. Heatschrink the thick parts of the connector so that they cannot short out, but leave the thinner male parts bare and of course the opening of the female connector sufficiently clear to put them together. For the heatschrink a ligher set a bit high works. Don't get it too close. It only needs to shrink, not burn. Don't use the prop savers. They cause more vibration then they are worth. a very small drop of locktight on the four screws with which you mate the prop adapter to the Turnigy motors is advisable to make sure they don;'t come loose over time. Don't do extensive motor testing without props. They don't seem to like that very much. If you test with props you can either use small props to still have some load but not enough thrust for actual lift, or just lash down the craft properly. I wouldn't do the first as repeated changing of props isn't all that good for the thread on the alu prop adapters. So better lash down the craft. When running motors are not needed, you can also just disconnect out one of the three motor wires on each of the motors which will prevent them from running. If you do have to run the motors, make sure nothing can blow into or get caught somehow by the props. They can cause serious damage. If you're build is going to be based on the Quadpowered board, best post questions in that thread as well as that's where any specific help will be concentrated. |
