3D printing ribs

Bumped into these, looks promissing.

The xyz printer will be at only 500$, prices dropping fast.
Within 2 years some or a lot of us will be printing ribs...?

For airframes, the ABS weight is still a lot higher than balsa or plywood....

Looks cool but like you said the down side is the weight. I think your far better off with balsa that is laser cut or cnc shaped.

The density of the plastic is higher than plywood or for sure balsa. But part of this extra weight can be eliminated by lighting holes, just as the pictures shows...cause the material is stronger and needs less meat for the same strength? i don t know.

True. It would be interesting to do a set of balsa/plywood and a set of plastic and see how the actual weights came out.

Spot on. As 3D printing becomes more widely accessible, people will figure out how to print the same rib shapes with internal structure that is appropriate for the material. And as Stupot points out the technology is evolving rapidly. We're only seeing the very early stages. Its going to be fun to see what happens next.

Google "Peachy Printer"
Newer technolgy 3d printer using a laser in Light activate resin.
A wee bit more sophisticated than squeezing out ABS spaghetti noodles..
$100 kickstarter price. But mk1 version is 'small', albeit scalable
That said IMO a 3d router is infinitely more suited to Toy airframe production.
Why make a myriad individual parts when one can carve out a complete airframe.. using a far less expensive machine ?
